Man I didn't even realize that Dalton has $5m in dead money on next year's cap. I thought it was a clean cut 1 year deal. So we're going to be paying $12.6m for Foles and Daton regardless next year.

Wonder if the Bears got internal criticism with their QB decisions in the past which is leading them to go after a diversity candidate. Diversity is great but not if it leads to a Leslie Frazier and just like the Bulls search, it's an insult to act like you're only hiring someone because of their skin color. In the case of the Bulls, they got criticism for the AK hire and then went out and got Marc Eversley, who was the best candidate regardless of skin color.

There are a few good candidates out there that aren't white and they're not Leslie Frazier.

It's these sorts of unforced errors that are why he had to go. I think he's a really good scout but just way too much of this horsefeathering nonsense.

I've done a lot of reading on coaching candidates this week...these are my 5 picks not in any order but I like the first 3 a little more than the other 2.

Josh McDaniels

Byron Leftwich

Nathaniel Hackett

Ryan Day

Brian Flores

Seriously Harbaugh should stay at UM for at least one more season. Spend all those years of heartbreak, people picking you over & over about not getting over the hump. Finally after all that, total vindication. Then just leave?

I get that it makes sense on a couple levels but it feels to me like he’s got unfinished business at UM that he needs to complete.

The results haven't been there obviously, but I think what Cleveland's done the last few years has been mostly good process. (This guy was not around for the scorched earth tanking prior to the Mayfield era I believe)

Is GM a promotion over VP of Football operations? I guess in title it’s worse but in responsibility he has full control over the Bears vs likely reporting to a president of FO in Cleveland

Unforced errors. I like that. But yeah, probably didn't have to give Dalton that much. Probably didn't have to trade a pick and pay Foles. Maybe didn't have to trade up 1 spot for Mitch. Definitely didn't have to give Glennon 18M guaranteed or whatever. And that's just at QB

keep doing the reverse jinx thing. it worked with pace and now we need it to work with frazier.

Why of course? It sounds like VP of FO would be a title given to the GMs boss

I think it needs to be noted a lot of teams dealt with dead cap games this year due to the cap contracting. Big picture their flexibility is at least average situation, but the difference between like 5th and 15th is fairly marginal and in the top 5 cap groups diminishing returns kick in quickly IMO.

However it got that way, I’m not sure other teams have that much dead cap space between their backup and 3rd string QB. Bears are also paying Mack like $30m next year because of deferrals. If Mack is healthy it could very well be worth it but it’s a result of 2 years of selling out to win now and going 14-20.

I didn’t realize the Bears were middle of the road in terms of flexibility though, that’s awesome. How much of that is due to having their starting QB on a rookie deal?

The NFL has almost exclusively coalesced around GM as the top role, I suspect largely due to the anti-tampering and Rooney rules. Some variance in coach/GM power balance, but we haven't seen the title inflation like other leagues. Part of the reason I almost always roll my eyes at the demands for a Football Pres.

Also now the league will be creating Assistant GM as a "protected role" subject to similar rules so you'll probably see a lot of coalescing around that title within the next decade.

What’s the deal with Doug Peterson? Obviously led the Eagles to a SB but fell out of favor rather quickly. Is anyone in favor of him?
