This may be a terrible idea, but I was thinking it would be fun if Nagy made a limited package of plays for Field every week. It could be situational, like in the red zone, or just a random series with Fields coming out to run a play or a few plays. If each time the package was unique it would be like a trick play that Nagy loves, and if they were solidifying game installs for him bit by bit then it could actually help his development. Mostly I think it would be fun for another team to know he was going to randomly get in the game and force them to adjust to something very different than Dalton.

That would be a good and fun idea. But my favorite idea is just starting the season with Fields.

I'm thinking it would be awesome to maybe package an entire offense around Fields. That would allow the Bears some flexibility to make a special package of plays for Dalton. Like, say, the holder on extra point attempts.

why, so you can get your franchise QB hurt while not playing QB?

just start him

I actually think Nagy is going to do this [expletive]. He already had this mapped out for Mitch when he was the backup last year. Of course Mitch injured himself on the very first play and was out multiple weeks but I’m sure Fields will be just fine.

I'd be OK with it, if it's done for the right reason. If Fields isn't comfortable with the entire playbook and has certain things that he does well but you can't build an entire offensive gameplan around those things, then it makes sense. But nothing about Fields leads me to believe that will be the case. He transferred to Ohio St in January, threw TD passes in the April spring game, and completed 72% of his passes and accounted for 5 TDs in his first game in August. So, I have no doubts the guy who eats, sleeps and breathes football can't have this offense as close to mastered as possible from April to September with reps in rookie, mini, and training camps, and preseason games while not having to worry about a college courseload.

Yes, this was my thinking, to allow him to execute things that Fields is learning and gaining confidence in.

Miller was clearly on the block all off season. Sucks they couldn't get much for him. Hopefully they replace his roster spot with someone like Steven Nelson. Wish Miller got a chance to play with a good QB for a change, but there was very little chance/incentive to sign him longterm after this year anyway. And he's still not getting that good QB in Houston, most likely.

Interesting signing.

Definitely provides better depth than Holtz/Horsted if Graham or Kmet were to get hurt.

Is cutting Graham an option to open up money for other positions? Not sure where his contract is at.

Has anyone heard how Fields is doing at training camp?

Shaky the first day whereas Dalton looked crisp. Looking better and more comfortable in subsequent days.

That's the gist of what I've seen.

Fields hasn't been bad by any accounts, but Dalton seems to have been the better QB on the first 2 days. I've read Fields has been better the last 2. Reports are about what you expect. Dalton has leadership, solid command of the offense, helping out Fields whenever he can. Fields is fearless (throwing into tight windows) and showing strong arm talent, while at times holding onto the ball a little bit longer than desired.

After what happened on Friday, hook this horsefeathers up to my veins. I'm sure Nagy will ruin it by stubbornly sticking to his stupid plan as the Bears go 7-10 but whatever.

Think 7-10 is the likely scenario no matter what given their schedule

I'm finally reading this year's Football Outsiders Almanac, and there's some good nuggets in here:

- FO only gives the Bears a 27% chance at the playoffs. They're the 21st ranked team overall, so bad but not terrible, but they're expected to have the toughest schedule in the NFL by A LOT

- On the topic of Pace's proclivity to give up draft picks, Pace has given up the equivalent of 3.2 first rounder since he took over based on the Chase Stuart draft model (the one that gives more value to mid round picks). By the traditional Jimmy Johnson chart it's 2 first rounders. Unfortunately they don't show what the numbers would be if you back out the Mack trade, which I'd be very curious about

- A big portion of the Bears section is recapping how much Trubisky and Files sucked last year, which I didn't need advanced analytics for? They do confirm that both guys sucked about equally, and their difference in traditional stats was mostly schedule

- "Chicago opponents threw 36% of passes in the middle of the field, the highest figure in the NFL. Chicago's DVOA on these plays matched league average". This was something that has bugged me for a few years. Feels like the Bears get shredded up the middle, turns out it's a yes and no kind of thing

- They're pretty high on the offensive line all things considered, especially since they were really bad (particularly against the run) prior to the bye last year. Ifedi especially gets more love than I'd have guessed

- The advanced numbers are not nearly as high on Robinson and Mooney as the traditional ones, though the author's are quick to acknowledge how hard it can be to decouple QB play from WR stats, even advanced ones

- Conversely, the advanced numbers are much higher on Montgomery than than the traditional ones, primarily because of how bad the line was his first 1.5 seasons as a Bear

And here's the full blurb on Fields:

Fields seems to have the widest range of scouting opinions in his class, and that may be due to outside uncertainty in how he played versus how Ohio State asked him to play. He routinely held the ball in the pocket for more time than other rookie passers this year, but that allowed him to work down the field. He has the arm strength to avoid the anticipatory throws other passers must make and the athleticism to tuck and run for first downs when plays fail to develop. In fact, he has all the tools. With 83.2% adjusted accuracy, Fields is the most accurate passer that Football Outsiders draft analyst Derrik Klassen has charted since 2016. Fields’ traditional statistics, however, are hurt by a class-leading 5.3% drop rate, and his perception seems to suffer from an association with recent Ohio State quarterback bust Dwayne Haskins that has no bearing on his own NFL potential. The Bears paid a lot to move up to draft him, but Fields looks more like a No. 1 pick than a No. 11 pick in his metrics.

Foles with some interesting comments...basically trying to recruit himself to Indy, implying that he rejected trades over the offseason because he wants to go to the right fit, saying hes a better QB now than when he was in Philly for the SB, etc

Perhaps it is a good thing he chose football...

“I was just thinking about baseball, actually, when I was sliding,” Fields said. “Stealing first base and going to second. You do that a lot in baseball. It’s definitely easy for me.”

Stealing first base?
