I expect they replace Phillips (all the rumors seem to make this one a simple prediction) and fire Pagano. Pace and Nagy both have 2 years left on their contracts

I don't believe there have been many rumors on that Phillips story. There was a tweet from some rando that got some play but I have not seen much of anything suggesting it's on the table, let alone imminent. It should happen, but I'm more just hoping than reading the tea leaves.

Also, Pace would need an extension to get 2 more years on his contract, not sure if you were just implying that would happen.

The story was from David Kaplan said on ESPN100 that he got a text from someone connected at Halas Hall. And i fully believe the story about Pace quietly getting extended an extra year to have his contract end with Nagy's. I have nothing to tell me I should believe either of these, but both seem like logical outcomes.

I've started from the theory that I think they are sick of the constant turnover since Lovie left and will error on the side of stability if these guys show competence. Part of investing in young execs and coaches is the real ability to grow into the job.

So I'm definitely a good target for those rumors and am happy to think they're real.

I heard the same rumor as Raw. That's why I said through 2022. It would be more reasonable or easier to cut both Nagy and Pace loose if they are on their last year, but a tougher pill to swallow if they had more than that remaining on their deals. There was also plenty of rumors that George was unhappy with the team, which is why I think someone high up has to go. That puts Ted in the crosshairs. Pagano wouldn't be a big enough splash.

and yet, I can totally see George side-stepping the issue by ONLY firing Pagano

I personally don't mind if this is taking a few days. This shouldn't be an easy decision, especially if not a clean sweep. It's not like they're going to run out of good candidates for any role they are hiring.

I dont necessarily mind, but I'm also now just impatient and want the slightest scoop haha. Like is it Nagy v Pace in there right now, battling for George's affection? Are they trying to decide what role Ted plays?

Dane Brugler 2 round mock draft: https://theathletic.com/2316582/2021/01/12/nfl-mock-draft-devonta-smith/#click=https://t.co/GqHR1gsv1K

20. Chicago Bears — Teven Jenkins, OT, Oklahoma State

There is an obvious need at quarterback in Chicago, but the demand outweighs the supply, especially with several other teams needing quarterbacks drafting in this range. The Bears also need to invest in their offensive line and Jenkins has experience at left tackle, right tackle and guard.

52. Chicago Bears — Dyami Brown, WR, North Carolina

With Allen Robinson possibly playing elsewhere, the Bears could be in the market for a dynamic wide receiver worth developing. With skills like Stefon Diggs, Brown has big-play speed (he averaged more than 20 yards per catch the last two seasons) and will continue to rise throughout the process.

Clearly Champ Kelley has asserted his authority and bought up all the houses and refuses to buy hotels and Pace is arguing how he's ruined the game, but he refused to concede the game and now they're just going turn by turn until Pace has been bled dry becuas he doesn't understand economics.

Theoretically, if Pace and/or Nagy were fired, how would you rate the appeal of the Bears compared to the other teams with available openings?

Other HC openings:

Atlanta

Detroit

Houston

Jacksonville

LA Chargers

NY Jets

Philadelphia

Other GM openings:

Atlanta

Carolina

Denver

Detroit

Jacksonville

Really not sure how the Bears fit in there. They theoretically play in an attractive market, though they would be joining a franchise that is run like a mom and pop shop. But they don't have a QB, their current draft position doesn't make it likely they can get one of the top 4 QBs without trading. They aren't talent devoid, but they are not in a particularly good place with the cap right now. On the plus side they control all their future 1sts.

They're definitely behind Jax in both, either way. I suppose where they rank among the rest partially depends on if it's both that are out or just one of Nagy/Pace, and potentially Phillips role as well.

If Nagy is fired and Pace retained, I think the HC job is very low on the list of attractive jobs. Maybe bottom.

If Pace if fired and Nagy retained, it's a decent job but not great. You'll inherit some quality players and should have an opportunity to replace Nagy if/when he disappoints. But you're saddled with an established coach and if that coach has any success, he'll effectively gain control of football ops and more or less override your authority.

If they clean house, it's a pretty great opportunity for a GM, and maybe a little less for a HC. But at that point they've fired a 10-6 HC and another one without a losing season and 2 playoff trips. Coaches will see an ownership with a quick trigger, 4 HCs fired in 9 years.

For places with HC and GM openings (assuming Chicago opens both):

1. Jags---Trevor Lawrence, already a decent offense, plays in the AFC South

2. Chargers ---Herbert, winnable team right away, downside is Mahomes and KC will run the division for the next decade

3. Texans ---Assuming Watson is staying you have a franchise QB, AFC South

4. Jets ---#2 overall pick, AFC East isn't strong outside of the Bills

5. Falcons ---Ryan is aging so need to find a QB but have some decent pieces here and NFC South has Brees and Brady retiring soon. Blank is a loyal owner though so there's some stability here.

6. Bears ---Have some decent pieces to build around but no QB and an aging defense with cap problems. Probably looking at a rebuild the next few years.

7. Lions ---Total rebuild here with less pieces to work around than the Bears

For head coach, probably similar. I'd probably put the Eagles ahead of the Bears just because I'm intrigued by Jalen Hurts more than anything the Bears have if they stick with him over Wentz.

For GM, Carolina is probably a QB away from being in playoff contention. They have nice pieces on both sides of the ball. I'd probably put them behind the Jets.

But basically, I don't think the Bears job is very attractive on either the coaching or GM side. It's really only made attractive by market size and fanbase. It's a team that's in one of the worst positions in the NFL going forward. If they make no moves, I'd argue they might be the team in the absolute worst position in the NFL given other teams in worse spots have a chance at making moves this offseason that could change their trajectory whereas the Bears are likely spinning in place for another season before a rebuild.

This is why change should have been made when they were losing 6 games in a row. Instead, they let wins over the Texans, Vikings, and Jaguars fool them and the Cardinals being equally incompetent extended things another week.

You're making quite the case for no changes.

Eta or fire both and give someone the Belichik/Carroll role. It's at least a differentiator role for a candidate then.

Actually that may be the McCaskeys best move. Put all your eggs in one basket rather than having to evaluate some combo of coaching and GMing.
