Reserving judgment until after the details are public.

I know GMs shared information digitally this summer. Can GMs watch any player’s video or does the target GM need to send the data?

From a baseball perspective, I really don't mind trading Darvish at this time. His value will never be higher and he's not likely to replicate the same type of success going forward. Not to mention the injury risk there. I'm okay with cashing in on pitchers and getting value than holding on to them for too long. Of course, I also would have enjoyed watching Darvish dominate for another year or so, too.

Let's just hope they pick the right players to get back.

(and I might also have to adopt the Padres as my "b" team when they're not playing the Cubs)

Yeah I'm all in on San Diego and Toronto this year now that we're returning to the time where I pay more attention to the Cub prospects than the mlb squad.

*If* we can get good starting pitching this year, I still think we easily win the division and are at least competitive with the better teams. We won't have any real weak spots in the lineup and are a bounce back or two (primarily from KB) away from being a really good offense.

Now...how we get the good starting pitching is a really good question at this point.

Jesse Rogers thinks the Cubs are getting 5 players and one of them is Zack Davies, fwiw.

I don't think he has much inside info but if he's right, would we hate Davies, Morejon, Campusano, Cronenworth, low-end prospect for Yu and Caratini?

Was Cronenworth ever considered a highly regarded prospect? I remember thinking I had never heard of him when he was doing well last year, but then again I don't follow other team's prospects all that closely except the top guys. Looking at his minor league numbers it looks like he suddenly figured it out in 2019 and it carried over to his rookie season in the majors.

I wouldn't hate it.

I wouldn't love Davies being part of the return as I still don't fully believe in him. But looking at the rest of the return as the delta in performance between Davies and Yu is pretty good, I think.

He blew up when he repeated AAA, so he was more of a prove-it kind of guy, iirc.

I think getting Davies in the pitch lab would be super interesting.

I think that's accurare but replace Morejon with Hassell/Head and frankly we should be pretty happy with that return.

I'm not sure how much more the pitch lab can extract from Davies.

I'd be much more interested in getting Morejon into the pitch lab.

Davies is homeless man’s Hendricks but he’s an okay piece for the year and obviously isn’t a main part of the trade. He can reasonably be expected for ~175 innings, ~4 ERA/FIP, ~2 WAR. We need some innings eaten. Would also be cool if we use Campusano to flip for Lindor or used Cronenworth to flip for Arenado.

He’s broken some moves before. If it’s Myers we better be getting a haul of prospects and one of their better ones. He sucks and makes more money than Yu the next two years.

Is anyone doing any payroll tracking this offseason like in years past? Once the trade is done and we know the financials I’d love to see how this affects the teams pretend salary cap for the next couple of seasons.

If Myers, Davies and Cronenworth (especially Myers) are involved and there’s no money coming over we actually add payroll the next two years. We’re in the $150-160 mil range right now. The trade, with those three and no money sent adds ~$9 mil this year (Davies projects for $8.5 in arb this year) and ~$12 next year if we were to tender Davies a contract in his final year of arb.

A bit surprised at an all-in type move after Snell for the Padres, but okay. They had a deep enough system to make it work, although honestly, I would've waited to see what Snell offered and see what the team needed at mid-season.

If this happens, I'm just glad the Cubs are making definitive actions rather than waffling. Really curious on the final names.

I'm not huge on Cronenworth. At best, he seems like a decent starter. I'm not sure he's better than Nico. That said, the Snell deal sort of set the market. If they can get Campusano and Morejon, that'd be alright. If only one, eh. Not huge on Davies - the type of arm you buy for an end of the rotation slot, but as the 3rd or 4th piece to a deal, okay.

I honestly would've preferred the Cubs asking for all prospects rather than getting average MLB guys. I'm just not convinced on Cronenworth being anything special.

At this juncture, I'd like to see the Cubs shop Hendricks. I really don't see this team doing much, even in a "balls bounce all our way" luck type of year. After all, those surprise runs are often predicated on strong pitching carrying a team in a series. Hendricks feels like he could nab a good return if he was offered on the market.

End of the rotation? Right now he's our #2 in the rotation.

Let's say this is right. This is the roster as it currently stands:

SP - Hendricks, Davies, TBD, Alzolay, Mills

C - Willson, TBD

1B - Rizzo

2B - Cronenworth, Bote

SS - Baez, Vargas

3B - Bryant

LF - Myers, Ervin

CF - Happ, TBD

RF - Heyward

(I assume Nico starts at Iowa, and Vargas is just keeping his spot warm)

Bullpen - Kimbrel + 7 guys

Payroll would be roughly flat with where it was prior to non-tendering Schwarber. I'd REALLY hope Morejon is one of the prospects. There's probably enough money left over to address that open starter spot OR the two open bench spots, not both.
