Costs more to lose Foles than to keep him next year. Also, if you believe the rumors it sounds like Pace is pretty safe because the McKaskey family loves him.

Then Foles can come in as the back up for a guy they draft or sign.

If they draft a guy, Foles would serve better as a starter/mentor then a back up

I'd rather Mitch lights up the scoreboard, gets a new 1-2 year deal while dropping Foles (despite the cost) and still drafting a high-ceiling qb

That is just awful.

If you were really set on moving on from Foles, in a trade the trading team would be in for 2/8M with 5 guaranteed. As a backup, teams could do worse. Even if it was like a conditional late round pick in 2022, just giving him away saves 5M there for Chicago.

Needless to say I'm not bullish on Mitch having some great 6 game run here that makes me believe he could be a bridge QB for a year or two. Foles as a backup and possible bridge QB in 2021 is the most likely course.

Has there ever been a QB who didn't have his 5th year picked up, got benched for the meat of the season, and came back to earn a new, substantial, contract?

History of QBs with declined 5th year option

Teddy Bridgewater. This was mainly injury influenced. Signed 0.5m/1 year contract

Blaine Gabbert. Resigned with SF (who had traded for him) for 2m/2

Jake Locker. Retired. I think he actually would have gotten a small backup deal and this was a legit retirement and not that he couldn't find work.

Christian Ponder. 1.5m/1

EJ Manuel. 0.8m/1

The 5th year rookie contract structure is fairly new. For instance Alex Smith had a 6 year contract, and renegotiated the final 2 years of it after his 4th year in the league.

Mitch said was blindsided by getting benched. The Bears decline your 5th year option, the team brings in a veteran to compete with you, you struggle to consistently run the offense, and you are blindsided that you are pulled? Trubisky has no self-awareness.

Thanks for doing the leg work. He's not getting an extension of consequence IMO.

Mitch sucks, no doubt. The likelihood he ever amounts to an average starter has to hover somewhere around 0-10%

That being said, in no universe is keeping Foles somehow a smarter move

I’d go so far as to say Mitch playing well isn’t in the long term interest of the franchise.

I'd say the long-term interest of the franchise won't depend on or be affected by how he plays one way or another. whomever they draft next is likely to suck just as much

Well what I had in mind was a total house cleaning Pace on down.

According to rumors, that isn't going to happen either since the McCaskeys seem to have adopted Pace

I mean, they're both equally wet and stinky turds and Foles is already under contract for next year while Trubisky isn't.

and that would be THE ONLY REASON for keeping him over resigning Trubisky

but dumping them both and signing a pile of straw would be a better choice. IDK, I never wanted Foles and hated the move from day one, and granted I'm done with Trubisky as well, I'd still rather have him to tie me over until our next complete and utter failure takes the reigns

I don't know what the board's opinion of Chris Collinsworth is, but I think he's top quartile of football announcers. Which makes it tragic that he's been replaced by TONY DUNGY for SNL, with Chris covering the Tuesday night game instead. Disaster.

Is Dungy doing update or just sketches?

Burton with another TD and Mike Glennon with a perfectly lofted pass 30 yards downfield for a TD. Can’t wait to see how Mitch does on another team next year

I’ve always thought Mitch was better when he pulls it down and runs more. It’s not a great commentary on his skills as a passer but if he wants to look better out there I think he shouldn’t hang around in the pocket. Look for running lanes more often, throw quickly or look to run.

F isn't even near L on the keyboard, so I can't even claim typo.

You and I are all that's left, dying for the fight that it's only a typo if it's caused by the physical act of mistyping and not merely a small mistake. Us against the world, brother.

This is a waste of time even bringing this up, but with the Arizona loss today, the Bears are a win tonight away from being back in the driver's seat for a playoff spot. A loss and they are behind the Vikings in the division due to the H2H loss.
