the cubs have absolutely choked the last 3 septembers right? i'm not getting my seasons switched around am i?

Yup, offense has completely died last 3 September’s. 2018 they managed like a .550-.600 win % somehow though.

I'm confused by everything. The playoffs are a crap shoot and the Cubs are just a whatever team, but they are in the playoffs already. So, why does it matter if the Cardinals win the division? Like, what is the huge benefit that we are supposed to care about, assuming you care at all about this season?

Home field in the first round matters a bit.

It seems like most of the time when a team gets into this type of extended offensive funk, there is usually a point where the team finally has an inning where they randomly put it together and score 3-4 runs. An example would be game 4 of the 16 NLCS. Cubs hadnt scored in 2+ games and then all the sudden they put up 4 runs out of nowhere in the 4th inning. Offense is back on track and everyone is happy. I keep waiting for that moment to happen, and thought it might be the other night when we actually scored 3 runs, but obviously thats not the case

I think most of us would probably agree it's more about not wanting STL to have any nice things, though. And to be clear, that's always an acceptable reason to root for something.

so the cubs will finish with a div record of 22-18. cardinals are currently 19-16, so if they win 4/5 vs brewers they will have that tiebreaker. next tie breaker is last 20 div games, and i'm not gonna look that up, but i'll assume it's awful for the cubs.

Would be pretty funny to lose 6 straight to finish the year and still win the division. Which isn’t all that unlikely. At least as likely as the Cardinals or Brewers passing us.

if they lose out, I honeslty do not want them to win the division..theres no real.advantage other than bragging rights, and they dont deserve it if that happens. they deserve to be mocked all offseason for doing this for the 3rd straight year.

I know im more negative than anyone, but the last 3 games have been unthinkable. if they cant take care of business this weekend, then horsefeathers them and good riddance.

There’s definitely an advantage to win and get 3 home games round 1 (Which the weather looks like pitcher weather in Wrigley next week and if the offense stays ass that helps our pitchers). Plus they could possibly be the “home” team in the DS and CS (depending what the Braves and dodgers do) and have more last ABs if needed. And yeah this is annoying but they still “deserve it” if they hold on. They’ve been the best team in the division most of the year, they put the Brewers and Reds away a week+ ago and showed up then and the Cardinals were idiots with the virus and aren’t good and the Brewers suck too.

And yeah, I think you’re legit the most negative person I know. Lol.

Trying to be like the 2000 Yankees. horsefeathers the bed at the end then win it all.

The Pirates starters in this series, with their ERAs coming into the starts:

JT Brubaker - 4.79

Steven Brault - 4.04

Trevor Williams - 6.70

Chad Kuhl - 5.03

Combined this is how they fared against the Cubs: 26.1 IP, 11 hits, 3 ER

Edit: Overall, the Cubs batting line for the series was .162/.259/.285/.544

They have a sub 3 starter ERA since around the second week of September I think Len mentioned the other night. They’ve been on a good run. Still they all are middle-back end starters and they shouldn’t be shoving us like that.

Kuhl, Williams, and even Brault have shown some talent, division games are a drag, these games are meaningless towards the standings barring catastrophe. I like Kuhl a decent amount, wouldn't have been mad if he was on this staff the past 3 years or the Cubs came up with an equivalent pitcher

I wouldn’t mind any of Kuhl, Brault or Musgrove on the team next year if they’re available. Still think Musgrove especially has another level to unlock. Brault is kinda like Monty.

If they blow the division, they'd play at San Diego, right?

That’s the most likely outcome. It’s possible they’d play whoever wins the division between the Brewers or Cardinals though too. The Marlins win out and we lose out (It probably takes losing out to lose the division) we tie with them and if we lose tiebreaker we’d be the 6 seed. The Padres offense has been in a funk like ours and Clevinger is hurt too, fwiw.
