Giants lose, bumping the Brewers into the 8 spot for now, reducing the Cards magic number to 1, and keeping the Phillies alive for a spot.

4 teams alive for 2 spots going into the last day of the season.

I'm so damn confused...am I right in saying that the only scenario where the Cubs play the Cardinals if the Cardinals and Reds both lose tomorrow (regardless of what the Marlins do) ASSUMING the Cardinals also clinch a playoff spot tomorrow?

I've literally been typing up scenarios for the last 30 minutes but I got a headache and just deleted everything.

Edit: nevermind, if the Cardinals lose tomorrow they’d be tied with the Brewers duh

If I’m the Marlins, do I even want to try to win tomorrow? Would you rather play the Cubs in the WC Round or the Padres? Padres are 3 time zones away, are the dangerous young team full of bats, and the winner likely plays the Dodgers in the NLDS. Though depending on Clevenger’s health, maybe you want to avoid Darvish and Hendricks shutting you down in 2 games. Interesting dilemma. If the Marlins want the Cubs they can certainly dictate that tomorrow

Someone typed up all the Cardinals scenarios for tomorrow/Monday. While it doesn’t talk about seeding outside of the Cardinals, I’m pretty sure the Cubs can only play the Marlins or Cardinals so you should be able to determine the Cubs opponent in every one of the scenarios

Per bukie before the Giants loss:

- Reds clinch 5 seed with a win and Cardinals loss, they win tiebreakers vs Marlins, Brewers and Giants, lose tiebreaker vs Cards

So Marlins win (31-29), Reds lose (30-30), Brewers win (30-30), Giants lose (29-31), Cards lose the DH (29-31). We play the Reds I believe. I assume if the Giants win it would be the same. Can’t see St Louis losing two to a Detroit team with nothing to play for though.

Clevinger and Lamet are both done. I think the Padres are vulnerable, their offense is also as bad as ours over the last few weeks.

Simply, if the Marlins lose today we are guaranteed to play them?

If the Reds or Cards win today, the Cubs will play the Marlins.

If they both lose, and the Cards either don't play the extra games or split them, the Cubs play the Cards (even if the Marlins lose).

If the Cards somehow don't make the playoffs, and the Reds lose and the Marlins win, the Cubs play the Reds.

Here's a chart of the 32 possible scenarios and how the seeds would shake out in the NL:

The only other thing the chart doesn't cover:

- If MIL wins, they are in the playoffs 100%. Seeding would depend on the rest of the league's results.

- If SFG loses, the Cardinals are in and would not play extra games regardless of other results.

Edited the chart to show the Phillies are playing the Rays, not the Nats. It's essentially the same, but the Rays are a better team, though playing for nothing and may toss out the lineup of "players not expected to see time in the playoffs".

Giants and Phillies HAVE to win the make the playoffs. If both lose, the Cards and Brewers are in regardless of that game's results.

Indians win, so if the White Sox lose, the Indians will be the 4 seed and WS 7th. If White Sox win and Twins lose, the WS are the 2 seed and Indians 7th.

NL playoffs set:

1. Dodgers vs 8. Brewers

2. Braves vs 7. Reds

3. Cubs vs 6. Marlins

4. Padres vs 5. Cardinals

about as well as it could have set up

it's crazy that none of nym/was/phi could get in with the expanded postseason

White Sox lose, putting them 7th, Indians 4th.

Twins trailing 5-2 in the 10th,As get 2nd if the score holds Twins 2nd if they win.

Kinda crazy to think there's a remote possibility the four remaining teams could all be from the NL Central.

Watch the Cubs be the only team to screw that up.

Reds beat Twins 5-3, and AL playoffs are set:

1. Rays vs 8. Blue Jays

2. As vs 7. White Sox

3. Twins vs 6. Astros

4. Indians vs 5. Yankees
