I’m fine passing on him at that deal, since there’s legit velo, health and performance concerns. Plus we just do the Jeffress deal for less money and he’s the vet off a bad/injured year.

By Fangraphs WAR, Strop is the 4th best Cubs reliever of all time. And considering his consistency and longevity I'd bump him up over the current #3 in Marmol.

I know it's sad that Strop is signing with another team, but this isn't the last time Strop pitches for the Cubs. I'm calling it now -- we're going to acquire him again in a trade when we do our annual bolster-the-bullpen push in July one of these years. Maybe next year or in 2 years, but I sincerely believe he'll pitch for the Cubs again...

Beyond that, when his career is over I'm pretty sure he'll rejoin the organization as a pitching instructor/coach (Theo loves the guy, as do many in the organization). I think when fully healthy he's a good reliever, but he's not the dominant Strop we're used to (or remember). I doubt he ever returns to being that guy again.
