Well in this case its because he slowed down assuming a ground rule double and then bizarrely sped up and tried to score when there was not good odds of scoring.

i'd have assumed the guard is just considered part of the field of play, not a ground rule double

 

it's no different than if it hits a wall or a chair or whatever. it's still on the field.

Why is there a basket in front of that video board? Seems like that should have been removed when the board was installed. The purpose of the basket is to keep fans from interfering with balls in play.
