My god, Chili Davis was horrible at his job.

He really, really was. I didn't think hitting coaches mattered that much, but he's sure making me think they somehow do. Or they don't, but he's just the one really bad exception.

Cubs have 36 homers in 25 games (assuming no more today). That puts them on pace for 233 on the year.

If they maintain this pace, they'll pass last season's home run total of 167 in Game 116.

I'm all in on Bote at this point. He showed last year that he could hit the hell out of the ball and play strong defense. This year he's showing that he can control the stikezone without horsefeathering with the power.

Same. I was always in the camp of “hitting coaches don’t matter”, but, it’s hard to say that is the case after the day and night job by our roster with almost no changes in personnel

The way I look at it, it's not necessarily that a good hitting coach makes a team significantly better, but that a bad hitting coach (or any coach) can easily make a team worse.

A good hitting coach only exists to keep a player from falling into bad habits, and keep focused through a season. In certain cases, a good hitting coach can identify a flaw and significantly improve a player, but those are rare.

I normally don't really care about hitting and pitching coaches. I think they are easy to blame and that players' talents (or lack thereof) shine through in the end. But the Cubs were bad in a way that Chili specifically spoke at length about changing.
