That's a lot of baseball

We're seeing pitcher movement ... I hope Rollie Lacy gets the call to Myrtle. Am curious if his stuff holds, and he was a college arm, so might as well find out sooner than later.

Wait, if Thompson is up, did someone get bumped from that rotation (up or out) that I'm forgetting? Or are they shifting Rucker to the pen? Because it was what, Swarmer, Robinson, Hatch, Rucker, de la Cruz.

I think they should shift Lacy to the bullpen. I've been watching him pitch and he's not overpowering, but he gets a lot of groundballs with his delivery and movement. I think he'll eventually settle there anyway, but might as well make the move now.

I want to keep Rucker in the starting rotation for now.

Lacy started in the pen, and may go back there, but at this point, he's been too good as a starter to just shift back to the pen. There are no glaring mechanical/delivery issues that I'm aware of that might force him there eventually (unlike Rucker, where there's some modicum of concern - to be clear, I'd rather keep Rucker in the rotation at AA as well, but if Thompson's up, something's moving ... maybe it's Duncan Robinson to AAA?). He has a starter's arsenal, with the breaking ball still sharp, and he pitches to his abilties. I'm of the opinion you let Lacy run with it as a starter and see what happens. The other option to push up is what, Erich Uelman? I'm fine with that as well, although Lacy is probably as bit more refined than he is right now. Uelman has a bit more ceiling, as he has more of a power sinker compared to Lacy, but at last check, seems like his breaking ball is a bit behind.

Lange gave up a leadoff HR and then was awesome from then on.

With all this talk of promotions he might be ready for AA soon.

I haven’t seen anything official from the minor league teams. Thompson’s mom tweeted the Keegan info. I would bump up Uelmen to Myrtle Beach and Robinson to Iowa.

Update: Erich Uelmen promoted to Myrtle Beach.

The Cubs top five picks in 2017:

1 - Little - SB rotation

2 - Lange - MB rotation

3 - Abbott - MB rotation

4 - Thompson - Tennessee's rotation

5 - Uelmen - MB rotation

Some nice results half a season in, especially when you consider this regime's previous struggles with drafting pitchers.

Tyler Thomas had 11 Ks and 0 BB in 6.2 today.

Thomas has had one start in which he's allowed more than 2 ER and walked more 2. And it was the same game. 11 games, 9 really good ones. (He had two back-to-back, May 3rd and 9th that weren't great). There's something to be said for consistency as a prospect.

In his last 5 starts, 28 IP, 14 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 5 BB, 29 K, 2.25 ERA, 0.68 WHIP.

He's right there in the same tier as Lacy. 6 months younger, just as deserving of a call up and no place to put him. I like this new problem the Cubs have. Very few TOR possibilities but plenty of depth of guys with a chance.

Thomas still throwing high 80's, or have the Cubs been able to tweak something to find another mph or two? Not as big of a deal since he's a LHP, but obviously it would be nice.

Yeah, and Lacy and Thomas are excelling in SB rotation. If success in low-minors constitutes success, that's a pretty good start. Not sure any of these guys are going to have stuff that carries up well, so pretty hesitant and cautious.

Kind of different from the Bryant draft, where there was considerable focus on college pitchers (Zastryzny, Skulina, Masek, Frazier, Garner, Wilson, but then senior-sign 10th rounder Zach Godley ended up signing for $35K and being the guy who's gotten over 50 big-league starts. Masek and Frazier, those guys never even got off the ground.
