If when Darvish comes back everyone in the rotation is healthy, what will the Cubs decide to do?

Montgomery has proven more effective than Chatwood this season, but do they decide Monty only has a certain amount of innings he can throw in 2018 and put him back in the pen to limit them so he can start again later when there is another injury?

Or do they just make Chatwood the long reliever who comes in during blowouts and/or when the entire pen has been taxed/used?

Pitchers suck so someone will probably get hurt before then or Monty will regress. But I’d guess Monty is probably going back to the pen for the most part. There’s some long stretches of games in th 2nd half and at least 1 double header, he’ll get his starts in that double header and probably 6-man for a time or 2 through to get extra rest.

And also again pitchers suck so someone will probably die before there’s a decision to make.

Agree on pitcher injuries, but in the hypothetical that none are hurt, it will be interesting.

I concur with your thoughts on what they do. Although even when Monty regresses, he likely gives us a better chance to win every fifth day than what Chatwood is doing right now. But......Chatwood could also get better.

At this point, the best case scenario has Darvish making around 1 start before the all-star break, so really you have a month to see if Chatwood looks better or Montgomery loses steam before you have to make that decision. Given the info we have now, you can't take Montgomery out of the rotation. He's not merely been capable/decent, he's at 3 ER in 23.2 IP over 4 starts. He has been a little fortunate, the Brewers and Mets are bottom of the barrel against LHP, but the Pirates are 4th in the NL(Cubs are 2nd) and he's faced them in both of the other 2 starts so it averages out fine.

I mean yeah for as annoying as horsefeathers Chatwood has been, he’s typically still going 5-6 innings and 4 or less runs. It’s stupid to watch but he’s keeping us in games. I’d say it’s more likely Chatwood has positive regression to being like a 3-4 walk per 9 guy than Monty being what he has been lately. And they are all going to get their starts regardless, there’s a path for Monty to get 8-12+ starts without any more injuries once Darvish is back.

Yeah, it's hard to give a horsefeathers that Chatwood has "only" given up X number of runs when he's just so ridiculously bad. Like, how can anyone possibly attribute that to him?

He’s gone 5.1 or less all but 3 of his 13 starts. He fucks the bullpen ever time he pitches. Monty is pitching really well and the other pen lefties are doing well enough that you don’t need him there (sup Randy). Make up a career ending injury for Chatwood like they apparently did for Butler and let’s never speak of him again.
