an extended slow start by this year's team would be a lot more concerning than last year's

Explain

because last year we knew the back of the rotation was killing us, and that it would be taken care of either at the deadline or in the offseason. the rotation we have now is locked in. if darvish and chatwood disappoint, it's a much bigger problem. also russell and schwarber are coming off bad years, so if they struggle again, it would mean they probably just suck. then of course there's been the immediate implosion of happ, which has probably completely tanked his trade value.

basically, there are fewer reasons they should be sucking this year, and less ways to fix it if it continues

Thank you for not doing a GIF for that response.

Unless you think they're hurt "the backend of the rotation" is going to be fine Darvish is going to be fine and put up his usual season, Chatwood is going to at least be a little better than the drivel that was making up the 4/5 spots for the good chunk of last year in the worst case scenario, Russell was hurt all last year pretty much and he's looked pretty decent outside of 1-3 bad games recently, Schwarber was slashing .270/.357/.595 coming in to the game today, Zobrist looks much closer to 2016 Zobrist than last years broken wrist Zobrist, when Rizzo comes back in a few days there's a residual affect that will help keep a lesser bat out of the lineup more often and protect against unfavorable splits in the OF or 2B, Carl/Cishek/Strop/Morrow all look like they are going to be extremely solid, Willy looks to be the real deal with the bat, as a team we're walking at an okay rate (9% and that's mostly without Rizzo) and not striking out that much (22%), we're hitting the ball hard (6th in hard hit%) and over all almost 80% of balls in play are hit either medium or hard, team ERA is in low/mid 3s, it's going to be okay.

man half the reason i posted that is because i wanted you to illustrate why it's wrong so i feel better about this team of ass

Because we have hundreds of games worth of info about these guys to tell us this isn't who they really are. It's two weeks. It means nothing.

And even though the results (wins) haven't been there as much as we want the underlying process of things still says we are doing things pretty well in a lot of areas with room for improvement.

We also have thousands of posts showing Duker is right 92 percent of the time. Therefore, I'm not in the least bit worried.

Even though it's baseball and anything can and will happen in a short series, the only thing I'm annoyed by this season is the Marlins series. That was far too difficult against a team that's clearly a Double A squad and hasn't done jack since.

Yeah, being annoyed is completely understandable. They've played like horsefeathers. And we waited for months to watch baseball and it's been boring as horsefeathers. They're pissing me off. This horsefeathers is getting old.

It's the being worried part I don't agree with. These guys have proven themselves time and again. There are no worrisome trends (unless you are worried about Rizzo's health) like every starter throwing 3 mph less in April last year. They'll be fine. And they'll coast to the division with around 95 wins.

i cannot even grasp what it must feel like to not be confident that this team is really good. what the hell.

I’m not trying to make excuses for them either, it’s frustrating no doubt and they are professionals so figure it out. But they’ve kinda had a weird schedule to start the year to get in to any sort of rhythm or routine with starting with so many games on the road, having 2 rain/snow outs and just extra off days and playing in mostly shitty weather in general (yeah the other team had to deal with it too), Rizzo going down so dudes playing unfamiliar positions, etc. it hasn’t been the most “normal” start.

I should stress, I'm not trying to get on anyone's case for being mad. This horsefeathers is torture to watch. They'e look like ass.

I don't know why they go through funks like this, or if it seems this bad for other good teams when they go through funks, or what. I don't understand this horsefeathers. It's just baseball being a stupid sport. We might have some guys that are just slow starters -- Kyle Hendricks seems to be. And that's despite them going 25-2 or whatever to start 2016. Regardless, they'll get out of it eventually. We have too much talent. And the arms look healthy (despite pitching poorly) and so does Zobrist. The rest of the team is a bunch of young guys who have been mostly healthy throughout their careers. So I really don't have any worries about this team. Maybe Rizzo's back will keep acting up, but it's going to take more than that to temper my expectations.

Still, yeah, this is horrible to watch. And it's infuriating to have it happen at the start of the year. I really hate watching them when it's so horsefeathering boring. And it's been boring all year.

I don't pay attention to the Nationals at all. But they enter 6-7 tonight, and I haven't even pondered that record or what is wrong with them because I know how much talent they have and that a slow start isn't going to matter.

I bet non-Cubs hating fans from other divisions or from the American League see the Cubs at 6-7 and think the same way.

you obviously did not pay attention in all of 2017 when he nearly killed everyone on the team

It would be fun to go back and look at some posts from the Game Threads after the last couple games of the 5-15 stretch from 2016. I bet there are some gems in there.

welcome to gam thread i am tre-

just kidding this team is horsefeathering garbage and doesn't deserve a proper thread. don't watch this game. go do anything else. even if they win, it won't mean anything. you'll still think all the same thoughts and have all the same doubts. we are well beyond a single game recovery.

so go do something with your friends and loved ones. eat nachos in the street. play catch with your kid at the park. go for a drive in the country with the windows down at dusk and smell the fresh air. whatever you can think of that you don't spend enough time doing, TONIGHT IS THE NIGHT YOU CAN DO IT.

you can check the score of the game when you think it's probably over. if the cubs happen to win, you'll have a bonus moment of happiness. when you (inevitably) see that they have lost, you'll be sad for a second and then happy you did something fun instead of wasting your time on them. you only have so many days left. fewer than you'd probably guess. how many times are you going to get to spend time with your parent/sibling/friend again, really? everyone is so busy, but part of the reason you're so busy is because you waste time on the cubs. don't do that tonight. they aren't worth it right now. hopefully they'll be worth it again soon, and you'll be fully able to carve time out of your schedule (aka the ever dwindling remainder of your life) to watch them then.

make them earn your time first, though. you have so very little to waste.

From the same thread:

maybe 5 months from now we'll be saying "we just 100 games plus the world series, and now we're adding jose fernandez AND schwarber to that team?"

Three out of four isn't bad.
