Let's pay $100 million for a 30-year-old outfielder that already can't play defense to try to make us a 99-win team instead of a 98-win team and in the process go over the luxury tax and have right field accounted for when Bryce Harper is about to join us next year.

I think it’s a fine deal for both sides. I do wonder how his power will play in Fenway though as I believe a lot of his power is to CF and Right-Center and those are the deepest parts of Fenway (and deeper in general compared to other fields iirc).

There's a segment of Cubs twitter that just wants to spend, spend, spend, this year and next. Partly, it's because they want to get the best players (back end of contract be damned) but I believe a part of it's a dislike for billionaire owners and specifically the Ricketts and wanting to spend their money.

He carries a 1.17 OPS in 400 oppo batted balls. I bet he's salivating at that 300 ft RF.

Down the line, sure but CF and RCF are deep.

I get that. Spend. Spend. Spend. And the Ricketts do suck. And I want to spend all their money. But where do we draw the line? Should we have signed Eric Hosmer, too?

i hate conservative horsefeathers billionaires like the ricketts and sincerely believe the low level luxury tax implications are extremely overblown but i’ve never thought for a second that the cubs should consider going after jd martinez. those people are crazy.

I know we can assume guilt by association (with his dad and brothers) but has Tom ever been connected with conservative billionaire horsefeathers? I don’t ever recall seeing his political leanings or donations in the media/public. The sister (Laura? Or Sarah?) is on the opposite side of the political spectrum of the brothers and dad if I’m not mistaken.

I think it's a fine deal, too -- mainly because any deal signed this off-season is going to be team-friendly. It is what it is. And it sucks for the players. But I'm not going to harp on any team (other than the Padres) for signing anyone this off-season. It's not that much money and he's definitely worth it.

But, he's just not the kind of player I want to invest in. He's always injured. He's into his 30s. The defense is already really bad and only going to get worse. Same with his base running. He just seems like a guy that could break down as he gets older.

And there are a number of other flaws that turn me off, too. He hasn't made any strides with his very real swing-and-miss issues. He's not that patient. He walked quite a bit last year, but that was mainly because he was terrifying to face. He hasn't really changed his approach at all. He has to hit with prodigious power to be valuable. He certainly did that last year. But it's safe to say he isn't going to be a 50-homer guy every year. He just seems like a guy that's destined to be a drag the final couple years of that deal. He's going to turn into Matt Kemp.

So, yeah, the deal is fine because of the collusion. But I'm not heartbroken that we aren't paying him that money. And I assuredly don't give a horsefeathers considering the other factors going into our decision not to go after him. It would be incredibly stupid for us to spend that money with Happ/Almora providing nearly that much value for nothing. Also... Bryce.

Not that I think they are a real threat for Bryce, however they are a big market with wild card ownership, but where does this put the Sox in regards to the LT for not only this year but also next year? They have to be pushing close this year and have to be nearly at it going in to next offseason with the guys they have under long term contract + arbitration raises.

She's a pro-lgbtq billionaire, not a horsefeathering lefty by any stretch.

Has Tom been connected? Well he's related to and business partners with multiple shitty trumpians, so yes, he is connected to them.

I don't want to derail this thread, but yes. Tom Rickets is every bit the horsefeathers his father is. The fact that they have a sibling who is gay only makes them that much worse.

Screw JD Martinez and his contract. Good luck Red Sox. The Cubs will have Harper next year.

EDIT: nevermind, gooney detailed it above.
