Nats fire sale continues. Brewers get Gio Gonzalez. Meh

he's been pretty crappy this year but this is not a "meh". Gio could replace 2 of our starter slots.

That says way more about our rotation than it does about him.

which is why we shouldn't improve it?

he was almost as bad as Gio was when we got him. I know, I know, Arlington but still. Depending what they gave to Washington, Gio was worth taking a flyer on

Did he clear waivers or did the Brewers claim him before we had a chance?

idk but if they gave up anything from low-level talent to nothing, it was a gamble worth taking. I doubt they gave up anything meaningful, being the chess players that they are up in Milwaukee.

His peripheral numbers are nearly as bad as any of the worst pitchers we have in terms of K/BB rates, etc. his last 8 starts he has a mid 6 era, near 5 fip and over 5 xfip and given up 32 runs, 53 hits, 22 walks in 42 innings. Unless they thought an environment change like Hamels would fix him (don’t think Washington is extreme either way) or he’d change his pitch mix like Hamels idk what there is to like, he’s been quite bad this year and in the last 2 months.

He also cleared waivers, so we could’ve gotten him. The VBs board are a bunch of prospect huggers but they think they gave up too much in the 2 prospects they sent I remember reading.

welp, I didn't realize just HOW bad he's been. He's been a very reliable, productive pitchers in years past. Its odd to see him drop off the cliff like this, even for an aging pitcher it seems extreme

(I've used this gif before for the same context, but this gif is too perfect not to use for every single bit of rival injury news)

I like this one for the same reasons

Johnson is a huge loss for them, IMO. I think he’s played a huge role in their pitching devil magic and other coaching things. He’s near the top of my list when Joe is gone to replace him.

Well, I didn't see that coming. Like, maybe a promotion or something. But just a lateral move to a team in the same division with a similar payroll is sort of interesting, no?

Definitely.

Very interesting...My speculation is that Johnson sees the arms and pedigrees on guys like Iglesias, Luis Castillo, Cody Reed, Robert Stephenson, Garrett, Lorenzen, Finnegann, that potential healthy Michael Fulmer clone they have in the minors, and a couple others as a group that can take his career to another level.

I’m a fan of how the Reds have quietly gone about their rebuild. The Senzel injury this year was a bump in the road but should he land and hit in the majors next year the Reds might become annoying sooner rather than later.

Sounds like he mostly left because the Reds gave him a huge offer or (more likely) the Brewers were being the cheap ass, poor team that they are and low balled him.
