Good for Wade, good job getting paid and thanks for 2017 and the draft pick.

Would really like to see Darvish decide soon, if he isn't going to be a Cub then I think there's a world of creativity(Machado? Archer? Reed?) they might more aggressively explore with the extra payroll capacity.

In some cases, I think we may be looking at multiples....

Trade for Machado, sign Reed, plus a cheap starter to compete with Monty

Trade for Archer, sign Reed, replenish what we lost in trade

Trade for Yelich, sign Cobb, replace traded parts

Sign Cobb and Reed

Sign Yu and be done

I think these are kind of our general options.

Guess I should add trade for Colome and sign one of Yu, Jake, or Cobb as an option, since its in Levine's latest article as a possibility.

Why are you using "or"? Why not sign and trade for everybody. :yahoo:

Good for Davis. I wouldn't want to give him that deal, but I'm also of the opinion that with Wade, 3 years is fine, and he might end up being worth it.

Such a slow moving market. Seems like the SP market is waiting for Darvish ... or maybe even waiting on Cobb, since there are some teams that probably won't go in on Darvish anyways. Wouldn't surprise me if the Cobb hold-up has as much to do with years and money as it has to do with some sort of opt-out. His agent has to be angling for some sort of opt-out (I mean, the situation all but calls for it, one of the better arms on the market, slowly working his way back, still in his prime) ... but is it going to be a Wei-Yin Chen type opt out, where the bulk of the money comes later, or will Cobb be able to "double dip"?

Here's hoping the Davis movement spurs the pen market, or more specifically, the closer market. Wouldn't surprise me if we got a rash of moves after the 1st.

I wonder if the hold up in the SP FA market is Gerrit Cole. With him and the Yankees so closely connected of late, if they are able to finalize a deal, the Yanks are then clearly out on Darvish and Cobb, and the situation becomes quite a bit clearer.

While I agree with your assessment that Cobb can certainly (re)establish greater value by having a big year next year and may be looking for an opt out as a result, is it fair to say that he is still in his prime? Not saying he can't be good for the next few seasons, but just how long do a pitcher's prime years extend? Truly asking.

He's probably at the tail end of his prime years, but with surgery the way it is these days, plus the lost years ... it's sort of a crap shoot. Typically, in the past, early 30's, to the best of my recollection, was the end of the prime years for starting pitchers.

You have a good point on Cole holding up the market. I mildly wonder if the better way to phrase the market stagnation has as much to do with cost as it has to do with .... simply waiting on the Yankees. Every agent wants to be able to use the Yankees as an option, and Cobb/Darvish have both been connected (don't recall Arrieta or Lynn attached). It seems like cost will be some sort of factor with them, though, and with their usable chips (namely, Frazier), the trade route still makes the most sense with them.

Sorta makes me happy that they landed Chatwood early for reasonable years, despite my concerns on Chatwood.

Yes, I was quite pleased with his signing. The concerns about him are valid (the greatest of which for me is health), but the GB% is elite, the spin rate is elite, the curveball was once well above average and has been under utilized in Coors and his away splits over the last 2 years are very good. I think his stuff plays up in Chicago especially with their elite infield defense behind him.

His potential (not his pitching profile) reminds me of Hendricks' when he first came up. He looks like a very good #5 with the upside to be a middle of the rotation starter. The price is right, and they got him for his age 28-30 seasons.

Given the obvious concerns of health and BB%, he was the one FA starter this year that checked all the boxes for me. Current performance for the price, length of contract, potential to outperform the contract and age.

If he stays healthy, I think not only will he have more value as it relates to his contract than Cobb, but he has a decent chance of being the better pitcher outright.

I see a lot of the similarities between Chatwood and Arrieta while he was in Baltimore, actually.

So apparently Wade Davis hated Chicago:

Guy posted this two days before the deal was announced, even got the Rockies right. He says Davis is a country guy that likes to hunt.

Lester is a "country guy that likes to hunt" and he seems to make it work. You don't have to go far from Chicago to find places to hunt. I hope he enjoys pitching in Colorado, although I don't think it's likely to go well for him there.

What he hated about Chicago probably has nothing to with his ability to find places to hunt. That is if he actually hated Chicago any more than the generic big city

Yes, I saw when you posted that statistical comparison. Nice digging. I don't know what Bosio did to unleash Arrieta besides let Jake be Jake, but if Hickey can do likewise with Tyler, we might be in for a very pleasant surprise.

Nobody that loves to hunt has ever enjoyed Chicago, have they?
