I wanted zero to do with Wade again so I'm fine with this.

I like the idea of what the Rockies are doing in building a super pen. I'm not sure how well Davis fits in Coors, but I think the general idea works with their young starters and the fact that they can get offense from anywhere.

Good for Wade, good job getting paid and thanks for 2017 and the draft pick.

Would really like to see Darvish decide soon, if he isn't going to be a Cub then I think there's a world of creativity(Machado? Archer? Reed?) they might more aggressively explore with the extra payroll capacity.

In some cases, I think we may be looking at multiples....

Trade for Machado, sign Reed, plus a cheap starter to compete with Monty

Trade for Archer, sign Reed, replenish what we lost in trade

Trade for Yelich, sign Cobb, replace traded parts

Sign Cobb and Reed

Sign Yu and be done

I think these are kind of our general options.

Yelich/Cobb seems like the best option of those IMO. Love Machado. Love Archer. But Yelich and Cobb under control for 4 years + potential to go after Harper >>>

If you do that, its a two pronged effect too. Lets say it costs Almora and Happ, plus minor leaguers for Yelich.....Leaves you with an OF of Schwarber/Yelich/Heyward in 2018. It gives you Schwarber to trade for cost controlled pitching, if you get Bryce. If he has a good year, there's our super team....

That's obviously hugely dependent on what it'll take to make two likely very costly trades. I'd much rather just sign Darvish.

Two trades?

Whoops. I got mixed up with the mention of the other names.

I don't really like Cobb at all as his AAV creeps toward Darvish's. If he's as cheap as we were talking before, then whatever.

Personally, I don't think their AAV's wind up THAT close. My guess at this point is 4/70 on Cobb and 5/140 for Yu.

I'd still take Yu in that scenario myself.

If Cobb costs that much I'd rather just grab Jaime Garcia or someone similarly mediocre on a 1 or 2 year deal. Cobb's not actually all that good.

I agree big picture though. On the pitching front we've probably got two moves left, and on the position player front we're probably done but we'll look to be opportunistic. Darvish and a super cheap reliever in February looks like the smart money right now, but I could just as easily see something like Cobb and Reed.

I liked it better when the Cubs got the 30th pick for losing Dexter.

True. At least with him and Jake, it gives us an extra 1.5 or so to the pool. Add in the overage and those 2 picks could conceivably wind up as an impact 2 mill type that dropped for demands.

I am basing everything on the assumption that we're staying under the LT this year, but expect to flirt with 40 over it next year. If not, then it probably becomes a singular FA of any consequence this year.

Meaning that I'd expect us to go over next year, but maybe not destroy it.

I fail to see the logic in how their bullpen is being considered a "super pen". Saw a Rockies fan on Reddit say "Mike Dunn was pretty good for us last year". He had a 4.47 ERA, 4.63 FIP, 4.72 xFIP, and a 5.0 BB/9.

Adam Ottavino had a 5.06 ERA and a 5.16 FIP, a 5.08 xFIP, and a 6.6 BB/9. He put up a -0.1 fWAR.

Chris Rusin's results were better than his peripherals would suggest so you can't exactly pencil him in for a repeat of last year.

Bryan Shaw has solid peripherals and is a perfectly acceptable pen arm but nothing legendary or anything and his numbers are sure to take a step back in Coors a little bit.

McGee and Davis are the only ones with any sort of elite-ness behind their names.

If that constitutes a "super pen" I'm failing to see how.

I probably start Montgomery than signing Garcia.
