FREE DA JERSEY - Week 15 Bears @ Lions, Saturday Afternoon for some reason 3:30 PM CT, NFL-N

Bears are 6.5 point dogs. Have no idea why they are randomly playing on a Saturday. I thought the NFL did away with Saturday games. Oh well, one step closer to NFL 7 days a week.

The NFL gave us a bit of a peek into what it looks at when creating the schedule. We can all expect the schedule to be released in the next two to three weeks.

This year there is an interesting wrinkle. The NFL is bringing back Saturday games weeks 15 and 16. That means we will have games on Dec. 16 and Dec. 23. It also means we can expect a full weekend of the NFL around Christmas. Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday, and the NFL will want to have one or two games on Christmas Day. That’s three days of games that weekend.

I am 100% on board with late season NFL games on Saturdays. They should only play on Thursdays on opening week, and after both teams are coming off a bye.

Go something like

Week 1: Thursday opener with marquee teams

Week 2-5: No Thursday games

Week 5-12: Thursday night matchups featuring teams coming off byes only, culminating in the three Thanksgiving games

Week 12-17: No more Thursday night game, but start playing Saturdays week 14/15/16

This is bloody brilliant and would probably appease the players, as well as they can be appeased

So Hester is retiring and all this tribute stuff is all over my Twitter feed. I remember being on here reading people question the pick when it was made (not that I had any idea who he even was). Now he's retiring as pretty much indisputably the best punt/kick returner of all time. Time freaking flies.

The most excited I've ever been as a Bears fan was when he broke loose in the Super Bowl.

Yeah, returning the opening kick-off of the Super Bowl is high on the greatest things I've seen watching sports.

I love that they actually have an HD clip of this on YouTube

There's not as much as I'd like there to be on there from that season.

Been saying this for years.

The only issue I see is that's not enough Thursdays for every team to have a Thursday game. Thus, some teams would get a full 2 weeks off, while others get 10 days on either side of a Thursday night game. Not sure who would be losing out here.

17 weeks of the season. But you take out Week 1, because that's not a BYE. Take out weeks 2, 3, 4, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17. Thanksgiving though, you can keep the current format. Cowboys and Lions stay with traditions but now always get pre-Thanksgiving byes. Then throw in a 3rd game at night, and you have 6 teams on bye then. So, that's 10 games in 8 weeks, but 32 teams.

I don't get it. Who is getting 2 full weeks off?

I didn't include week 17 because they already don't do week 7 games.

Every team that doesn't play on Thursday would get 2 full weeks off.....the way they do now during BYE weeks.

32 teams. 2 teams per game. So you'd need 16 Thursday games to make every team have the same BYE length. But since you can't have BYES the first 2 weeks and the last handful are too late in the year for a bye, you'd have some teams that don't get scheduled on TNF. Those teams would still need a BYE.......where they'd be getting 2 weeks off, because they are not playing a Thursday game.

One idea I’ve seen that I don’t mind the framework of would be something like (don’t remember full details) is to cut the league in to 2 groups of 16 for scheduling purposes (could be all AFC/NFC or like AFC/NFC East and South and AFC/NFC North and West conferences combined from both leagues this could change every year) you’d eliminate pre-season and one of the group of 16 would start the season in what normally is week one of pre-season while the other starts on a “bye” then both would play week 2 then every 4 weeks one group of the 16 would have off and it would still be a 16 game schedule and calendar wise takes the same amount of time. So every team picks up 3 or 4 bye weeks, Thursday games could be scheduled off the bye weeks and there would be football every week, theoretically it helps with injury prevention/recovery, and just a few times a year half the league is off.
