A controllable starter who hasn’t had great succes but good stuff like Lamet and a top ~50 prospect or 2 for Baez seems about like where I’d value him. Personally.

Yeah I couldn't tell if he meant on top of the controllable SP or he just meant a top prospect (or 2 top 50) could also get it done instead of the SP.

Yeah I wasn’t sure either but think if it’s an either/or with those that’s a little light, imo. He’s worth more than a Lamet or just top 50 prospect or 2 (unless we’re talking top ~10, which I don’t think he’s worth and it’s more likely you could get a top 25-75 guy(s) for him).

Here's the quote from the article. Brett read it wrong.

*The Padres balked at the Cubs’ asking price for infielder Javier Baez at the winter meetings, moving on to other pursuits, sources say. The Cubs likely would have wanted a controllable starter such as Luis Perdomo or Dinelson Lamet for Baez, who would have solved the Padres’ need for a long-term shortstop (though a top prospect such as Luis Urias or Fernando Tatis Jr. might prove the answer).

This is saying that maybe Tatis or Urias (top 50 prospects) could be the Padres' long term answer at SS, not part of the deal with us.

Cain make no sense to me (regardless of an OF being traded or if they just don’t trust someone or the unit as a whole). I’d rather have some combo of Gomez, Dyson, Jay, Jackson or Maybin for a fraction of the cost.

Both Cobb + Cain and Darvish/Arrieta + Yelich put you reallll close to the luxury tax, and make 2019 much more complicated to pursue a high end FA(need to shed significant salary or be ready to go into the draft pick-punishing penalty). I'll believe it when I see it, as much as Darvish + Yelich would be incredible for 2018.

Sadly, short of someone eating a significant portion of Heyward's contract it's probably not possible.

You can probably bribe someone with a prospect to take Zobrist's contract and make it a bit easier, but you also need to thread the needle on the pitching side too. All of the SP need to look like rotation guys for 2019, none of the important and/or high dollar relievers can blow up, and having someone internally(Maples? Mills? Mekkes?) look capable of a steady bullpen role would help too.

If you can lock in Darvish+Yelich right now, I say just do it even if it does take you out of the Harper sweepstakes (which it might not). With the amount of effort the Nats, Yankees, and Dodgers will put into Bryce, I'm fine not taking his free agency into account when going after talents like Darvish and Yelich who can play here this season.

that's what i meant. what a tough decision. two good players or two less good players. real sophie's choice.

We need something to happen so we can stop talking about trading Baez. I don't like that conversation.

Yeah. I really don't want Baez to be traded even though you can make a good case for it, especially if it's really lopsided in the Cubs' favor.

Maybe wait a year and then re-evaluate which of Baez, Russell or Happ is the best candidate to move in a trade.

Of course, we also have to take into account that we'd have to perhaps give up multiple other less good players to get Yelich. So it might be between two good players or four less good players. Not sure how the WAR looks on that one yet, depending on who the less good players are.

Lorenzo Cain might not be as exciting as Christian Yelich, but can you imagine a defensive OF of Almora-Cain-Heyward?

I still wouldn't do it... But putting that outfield behind an IF of Bryzzo, Javy and Addy would have to be one of the all time great defensive alignments.

The part I don’t get about the rumor that it could be Cobb and Cain is what is Almora/Happ traded for then? A RP? A SP or 2 that’s like 2-4 years away (horsefeathers that, TINSTAAPP).

Why would they have to be traded? Almora continues to crush lefties and Happ takes on the Zobrist role.

Spending tens of millions on Cain when you haven't traded any of the position players seems like a real inefficient use of the money. I'd rather have Darvish + nothing than Cobb + Cain.
