I'm not, nor have I ever been, an Almora fan, but I don't think I could do that trade. I feel pretty confident that a Happ/Almora platoon will equal, at worst, Yelich's value for about 10% of the cost. I'm not like "horsefeathers no!!!" but yeah, don't think I could pull the trigger on this deal.

i don't feel confident in that at all

I don't think I'd pay that price, but at the same time I don't think it's necessarily an unfair ask.

Why wouldn't you do it? What player out of that bunch is the one that makes you say "nope, that's too much" ?

It's two parts the guys we're losing and one part liking but not loving Yelich. Losing both of Almora/Happ and two of our top prospects basically cleans us out of valuable disposable assets. So this summer or next winter when some hole pops up we're that much less likely to have the pieces to fill it via trade. That's not the end of the world, but I guess I don't think Yelich is enough of an upgrade to want to put the team in that situation. Particularly with how thin our pitching staff is, I think we need to have the resources on hand to be able to go and grab a guy when something inevitably goes wrong.

Basically I'd rather win 93 games and save our bullets than push our chips in to win 95 games. Though like I said I don't think it's an unreasonable price, he's a very good player on a fantastic contract.

Yelilch has been a 4.5-WAR player three times already and just turned 26 last month. He's on an insanely cheap contract for five more years. He's had a .362-.376 OBP in all five seasons and has the potential to hit for more power (and if he doesn't, that's fine). And he plays center field, which is the one position that doesn't appear great on paper for the Cubs going forward.

I don't think it's really "pushing out chips to win 95 games." He's adding multiple wins cheaply for several years and taking up only one roster spot to do so (you could sign another player to replace one of Happ or Almora and add more wins that way too). Happ and Almora are fine players with the potential to be very good players, and maybe one of the prospects becomes something. But this is a legitimate, proven star, at the one position the Cubs could use an upgrade. They have so much depth that they can gladly afford to trade away multiple solid young players for one clearly awesome, still-young player.

I just wouldn't worry about giving up the assets the Cubs could use in a trade if they're using the assets to get Yelich. They don't appear to have other big needs going forward aside from one SP, and they could just sign that guy. And as Theo always says, more prospects will present themselves.

“If you reach a point where your entire farm system is in the big leagues, you’ve traded a couple guys for players who are now in the big leagues, you know what you do? You start over in your farm system and you keep developing the talented players you have. They become top prospects and you draft well and you sign well and they become top prospects. It’s not a static thing. It’s not frozen in time, where heaven forbid you trade a couple of prospects because you’re never going to have any again. No, you replenish and you move on.

We’re hopefully in a long cycle of winning. We want this, you could say it started in 2015, we’d like it to last at least seven years. If we have an unbelievable run — which we haven’t accomplished yet and there’s so much work to do — but if we have a run of contention from 2015 through 2021, I guarantee you at that point we will have fully replenished the farm system, and the cycle starts over again.”

To me the Happ/Almora/2 prospects thing is much more about if the Marlins would be willing to do it, and I doubt they would.

Yeah, a deal along those lines should be a no-brainer from the Cubs' side of things; I just don't think it's "flashy" enough for what the insane Marlins would expect.

With the way their roster is set, I keep thinking that something involving Baez is the most likely way to pry Yelich loose, but if their starting price for the Braves started with Acuna, it doesn't seem like a Yelich move anytime soon is likely.

It’s kinda weird all the sudden all this Brewers news is leaking. Almost like they just want to fake show fans they are trying, don’t end up with anyone and then can justify starting Gallardo and Sogards of the world when they win 72 games and be like “what are ya gonna do, we tried to get good players, just didn’t work out/got outbid.”

That's what a vaunted front office does

Can you imagine the window the Brewers are closing if they get Yelich? Marlins asked for Acuna from the Braves, apparently. The Brewers don’t even have a top 20 prospect, so many windows would be closed if they make a move.

Since we (me I’ll take the blame) are giving this guy some merit, he says Marlins have requested final offers on Yelich. Post 671. His source also thinks they have a good shot at getting him, I hope not.

He added some more after saying 95% chance he goes to Brewers, go to the Padres, Braves or Sox please.

“And the Braves, White Sox, Padres and Nationals are the reason it's not 100%. With the Braves being the biggest threat.

Plus I know the Brewers offer. And no I'm not telling anyone here or even giving the SLIGHTEST hints. That gets some people in trouble if you know what I mean.

Be ready though...... It's gonna sting a little bit.”
