There’s a belief that former Cubs general manager Jim Hendry, currently a special assistant with the Yankees, could be brought over to the Marlins by Derek Jeter, Heyman reports in his NL roundup. He’d work in baseball operations department under president of baseball ops Michael Hill, per Heyman, and while this particular report doesn’t specify a role, MLB Network’s Peter Gammons referred to Hendry as the “anticipated GM” in a column yesterday. Even if Hendry were to assume that title, however, Hill’s status as president of baseball ops would presumably still make him the top decision-maker for the Marlins.

So apparently they wanna drop their payroll significantly. Wonder what we could do to get a Stanton/Yelich package done?

To get both of them? We'd probably need a new middle infield.

Yeah i might be aiming too high. I was thinking you could get a discount for taking on that contract, but actually zId rather wait and give Harper our own dumb contract. Are there any realistic pieces we could pluck? Yelich's contract isnso good i doubt theyd move him in a "cost saving" move.

Like others said, an arm and a leg, and that might not be enough. That said, I think there's almost zero chance that they would shop them together.

For all the talk about Stanton's burdensome backloaded contract, someone's going to pay for it. Boston makes a ton of sense, as it feels like a Dombrowski move and they have the assets. I have my doubts the Yankees would get in on this, but they can't be ruled out if they offer some combination of Frazier/Torres/Sheffield. I mean, I wonder about the Cardinals, if they can clear out the space for the contract. I'd also add any of the teams with strong systems could take a peek. After all, they'd have Stanton to build around. but they may have to cut costs in the interim if their sheets can't fit it in.

Yelich ... not sure they move him. He's affordable and good. I'd love to have him, though. Defensive metrics are pretty bleh in CF, iirc (off the top, the numbers in CF weren't horrendous this year, but he's certainly below average at best), but I might be able to live with it. Have a late inning CF replacement ready and shift Yelich to LF late in the games. Having Yelich leading off would be awesome for this lineup. Yelich/Bryant/Rizzo/Contreras? Awesome. Still, don't see it happening (although perhaps they would have interest in Baez?)

I wonder if they might try slapping Wei-Yin Chen's backloaded contract with say Ozuna and see if someone might bite (assuming Chen can pass his physicals, but he did pitch late in the year). If they desperately need to chop money off, getting someone to take Chen's deal off might save them from more drastic moves, even at the cost of Ozuna. I wonder if any team would bite on some sort of deal like that ... or if they'd need the Marlins to eat part of Chen's deal.

As for Hendry, good for him. He's seen a stellar quick rebuild, and maybe he's learned some things with the Yankees. There were good moments under Hendry, so I wish him the best.

He was a decent farm director. If they use him in that role, good for them.

I don't want Stanton. He gets injured too often and his swing and miss profile is scary. I hope Poor TR is pinching pennies and scraping dollars together for Harper next year. Let the Yankees or Boston or St Louis have Stanton. It makes it less likely whoever gets him goes after Harper.

The thing about Stanton's contract is that, as a whole, it looks rough at $300mm, but the Marlins built in that opt out fully expecting him to exercise it. If he stays relatively healthy and keeps mashing he's going to opt out and get an even bigger deal. And the contract leading up to that opt out is extremely attractive which probably wont damage his trade value all that much. Only way he doesnt exercise that is if he inherits J.D. Drew's health.

The opt out is 3 years away, and requires Stanton thinking he's going to get a contract better than 7/218 starting with his age 31 season.

Yeah I have no interest in Stanton, let him be someone else’s contract albatross. Bryce or bust in a year.

What guarantee is there that Harper's next contract isn't a giant albatross? He's probably going to ask for a 10/$400M deal

It might be but Bryce is better at just about everything, has defensive value/versatility and will be younger

Harper is 6 weeks older than Baez.

I know he's basically a fetus, but any 10 year deal has the potential be a disaster.

Well of course, any 10 year contract has inherent risk but giving one to Bryce horsefeathering Harper at 26 is likely the best bet to not be. He’ll also get opt outs.

If you're Harper's agent, what year do you get the opt out? After 3 years? That way he'd still be under 30 when he signs his next deal. I think I'd be ok with 3 years of Bryce Harper and letting him go if that's what he really wants to do.
