Any idea that created a potentially non-decisive game in the wild card round is a non-starter.

Here's a summary: the WC series is a best of 2. Wild Card 2 needs to win both games of a double header to advance. Wildcard 1 need only win 1 game. That would make for some pretty intense game action. It gives the 4th best team a big advantage over the 5th best team. At the same time, it still punishes the 4th best team for not winning the division.

Downside: other than the fans of those 2 teams, who's going to watch the first 7 innings of game 1? So unless WC 2 wins game 1, ratings will probably go down.

what in the world would be the point of this fiasco?

People think that being the top WC team should get you more of an advantage than just home field for the one game playoff. #unfair

If you're a 99 win WC team and you can't beat an 85 win team in a 1 game playoff then you likely aren't doing anything in the playoffs anyway.

It rewards wild card 1 for having the better record. It makes it much more likely that the better team will advance than a 3 game series would. It still punishes the team for not winning the division (even more so if they don't win that first game). It is compelling/exciting for 2 games and the doubleheader aspect would involve interesting strategy. I imagine there would be an intense incentive to avoid that second game if you're the better team. You'll go all out.

Also, who other than diehard baseball fans and fans of the two teams are watching an entire wild card game? I think that most people would be tuning in those games late as well. In this system game 1 could potentially be it.

How about instead of 9 innings long, the WC game is 15 innings long? Y'know, just to arbitrarily make it more fair, YOU PUMPKINHEADS. Edited by Sammy Sofa

two game playoff has two eliminations games.

It also has one potentially non-decisive game, which is one too many

For all practical purposes, you are giving WC1 a free win in a best of three.

If 1 and 2 are tied in wins, are you gonna force teams to play a tiebreaker to decide that or let it be decided on some dumb stat tiebreak?

In that rare instance, I'm guessing it becomes a one game playoff. You know, like the system we already have that works just fine and doesn't need to be changed.

Shame on anyone who wants to emulate the NHL playoffs. The divisional rounds are dumb and bad in hockey. Columbus playing Pittsburgh in the first round was beyond dumb. Boo that idea

I don't think baseball playoffs need to change, but please explain this. What exactly was dumb about that?

the de facto 3 seed playing the 2 seed in the first round is kind of dumb.

I think the division matchups early thing is just really weird, when the whole point of the regular season is to determine the divisional winners. Why then relitigate that exact matchup in the first round?

1/8, 2/7, 3/6, 4/5 makes a lot more sense to me.

But the team with a better record starts the game up 2-0 and the worse record team only gets an 18 man roster

So the Jackets would have went out in round 2 rather than round 1?

I like the new hockey playoffs, its a hybrid of how the playoffs used to be prior to the mid 90's

What gooney said. While the Western Conference was pretty "normal" in terms of seeding, the Eastern Conference was a mess. Because of the mandatory divisional series, you had a first round of 1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 3, 4 vs. 5, and 6 vs. 7.

Well, the schedule is unbalanced. This happened in the Western Conference in 2014 when the #2 seed Blues played the #3 Blackhawks. Its not really a big deal other than losing in the first round instead of the second. You have to beat four teams to win the Cup, blaming the format is silly.

Besides the reason for this is because the West is split among 3 time zones while the East just one. Columbus and Detroit are now in the East where travel is easy, complaining is rather funny.

How is it funny? Columbus had the 3rd best record in the East and their reward was to play the eventual Cup champs instead of a team like Ottawa. It's nonsense.

I love hockey. I go to multiple NHL games a year in person, I seriously thought about buying a pair of season tickets this year and only passed because they didn't have any available that would be appropriate for my son (long story). Hell, I'm the old old of shape nerd who started playing beer league in his 30s despite being awful and barely being able to skate.

So believe me when I say this to you: Nobody in the world cares about how the NHL sets up their playoffs. Not even NHL fans outside of the weirdos convinced their team got screwed somehow.

That's clearly not true. It's discussed all the time. And it's not "weirdo" to be annoyed that your team earned a better draw in the first round than they got

That's just simply not true. It's like the 3rd or 4th most talked about topic about the sport among fans. Funnily enough, I hear mostly from Penguins fans that somehow think they are the aggrieved party in any situation.

Now sure, nobody else cares, which is why it's weird as hell that people want to blow up the perfect MLB situation in order to steal ideas from the gimmick a minute NHL.
