Anyone else agree with JD that Contreras was set up way too far outside? Felt like he was out of position to make the block there, though blocking a 58 foot pitch isn't ever easy.

he's the guy you want up in that situation?

LOL. Guys I would prefer in that situation:

Bryant

Rizzo

Schwarbs

Contreras

Russell

To each their own I guess. Zobrist has arguably the best eye on the team and doesn't strike out in those situations too often. We needed contact to move the runners along, it just didn't work out.

I def wouldn't prefer Russell (not even remotely) in that spot, and prob not Contreras, but otherwise yah.

Apparently Rizzo was technically the leftfielder for the last batter. My mind is now blown.

Also, that was a terrible game to watch.

I wouldn't complain if Rizzo eventually gains outfield eligibility for my fantasy team.

I feel like this whole "Joe feeling like he has to have both Zobrist and Javy in the starting 9" thing is going to hurt us in the long run.

Hopefully they didn't ask him to name any of his teammates during the concussion test.

I just wanna say again how great this post is and that it deserves to have the most (non-world series) likes in the nsb little heart button era.

I honestly think I'd rather be 2-2 with this bullpen performing as well as it has opposed to 4-0 because we donged the other teams into submission.

Normally I would say that's crazy talk, but there are so many guys with huge upside but big question marks in that bullpen. They've pretty much all looked great to this point.

Sorry that's dumb

Not really. It's a 162 game season. The bullpen has been encouraging

There is no situation where I would think 2-2 is better than 4-0.

Because you are incapable of nuanced thought

I'll take this year's 2-2 over last year's 3-1.

it's 4 games...two losses don't really have any tangible impact in and of themselves on the outcome of this season, but there might be things that happen within those 4 games that bode well or poorly for the rest of the season.

holy horsefeathers stop derwooding

This is not derwooding. This is not losing the forest for the trees. There's a difference between finding value within the gameplay during a loss and saying "I honestly think I'd prefer to be 2-2 to 4-0 because reasons".

Not to beat a dead horse, but putting it another way I'm more encouraged about our prospects of winning more games out of the next 158 due to how good the bullpen has looked than I am worried about the 2 games we've already lost.

Reasons:

1. I'm pretty sure we win the division no matter what, so I'm looking more at how strong the team will be in the postseason.

2. I know we're going to score tons of runs this year. I'm not going to worry about the main reason we have lost those 2 games - lack of offense.

You have to understand that it's good to see the bullpen put in high pressure situations and do well than not have them in high pressure situations, so we don't know. Regardless of the outcome, seeing the bullpen do well is a good thing, no?

I object to none of that.

That's exactly what the post you objected to implied

Why are you being dense? I objected the weird notion that he preferred being 2-2 with a good bullpen vs 4-0 without one, which is a weird false equivalence.

Because it's not automatically "weird" given the drawn out nature of the game we're here to discuss. Sure, 4-0 is great record-wise no matter what, but what if all 4 of those wins were something, like, 8-7, and required the offense donging out of their minds, or multiple comebacks/extra innings wins because the pitching stunk? Whereas the 2-2 team lost 2 very, very close games, the pitching looked damn good, and the "problem" is a stacked lineup getting off to a shaky start at the very beginning of the season. The context of those sample sizes are very different.

I'm on team Derwood here. If two wins are relatively meaningless, then so is the individual performance within those games. The bullpen could easily throw up some clunkers in the next week and make people feel worse about them. I'd rather bank those wins. Edited by Gilby

Which would make sense if he had said "I'd honestly rather be 2-2 than 4-0" and didn't explain what he was saying. Y'know, that thing that he actually did.
