Remember that string of marginal players that went to the Cards, turned in all star worthy performances then sucked as soon as they left St. Louis? Maybe this will be the start of a reverse trend where Fowler has 2 bad seasons, the Cards trade him, he becomes good again and the BFIB give him a standing ovation for hitting .230 while he was there. Forget that last part, Dexter Fowler isn't white.

Pick Tracker:

Cubs currently have the 28th and 31st picks. (?)

I don't know if this is the right thread to keep track of the draft pick situation, but it works for now... Is there a site that specifically keeps up with this? So far, I just see the Dex and Desmond signings affecting the draft, with Dex slotting higher... So, as I see it, the Cubs draft pick moves up to #28 and are awarded the first comp pick at #31.

I know baseball is a business (and I think its the right move for the Cubs long term) and its somewhat irrational, but man, this news just hits hard. I loved Dex. His personality, his character, and his performance were so important for this team. This team had their greatest struggles when he was gone. Could be coincidental, but also might not be. I get it.

At the same time, I'm so happy for him that he's cashing in after gambling on himself and choosing to return to us for a wild, magical ride. Enjoy getting your ring and your first ovation, Dex. Well earned.

He got the contract the wanted and that he waited for by taking a lesser deal last year helping the Cubs. Hoping it's around 5/100.

If this is their big move, they're still mediocre.

I'm fairly certain that the draft pick compensation slotting is done by team winning %. Thus, our comp pick for Dex should be the last QO compensatory selection before Compensatory Balance Round A begins.

Just saw they may go after Encarnacion now. So, slightly better than mediocre. A likely WC team even! Possibly eve projected within 10 games of us lol.

I'll believe that when I see it. I'd be surprised if EE doesn't stay in AL.

Signing EE or Trumbo would really double down on that 'defense is for cowards' persona they started cultivating last year. With Carpenter at 3B and Diaz at SS they might need to shift every right handed hitter just to have an average amount of range.

I love Dex, I would have been fine if they vanity signed him to a stupid big and long contract here, but its also not a great baseball move to sign a 31 year old to a huge contract when a lot of his game relies on athleticism.

I am a little bummed that it seems like no matter what we're going to see a decline in play from the CF spot - but mostly because Dex was so good and had a career year.

It's gonna suck to not have the first 4 players in our batting order basically .400 OBP players. That was nice. But we get Schwarber and (probably) Heyward back in some offensive fashion.

I'm jumping to conclusions because I want to, but these years and this money sort of indicate Dex really didn't want to play for them until they made it way too difficult not to play for them.

That's my story, at least.

Well, the reports were that they made an "over the top" offer, so I don't think it's biased at all to say Dex signed there because of the money.

After getting punked in free agency on multiple occasions recently, the Cards went bigger than they probably had to in order to address a need.

Schwarber's .500 OBP in the World Series is going to carry over into 2017. We're good.

Thanks for the memories, Dex.
