I’m increasingly annoyed by how much ownership is now in the room when negotiating deals. I get them having final approval over larger moves, but let the GM’s do their horsefeathering job

Ownership should always be in the room when negotiating the biggest stars.

5 hour meeting = clear-cut favorite?

Way to jump to conclusions, Bob

Considering the Phillies would prefer Machado. Nightengale is the worst.

Um it's literally what the sentence says. "Phillies emerge as clear-cut favorite to land Bryce Harper after 5-hour meeting".

that doesn't mean the length of the meeting is what made them the favorite

No, but neither does having the meeting at all. Nightengale is making assumptions about the nature of the meeting. Just because they met for a long time doesn't make them favorites. Nightengale's only basis for the article was that the Philadelphia people "felt good about the meeting". So they talked for a long time and the Phillies thought it went pretty well = Phillies are CLEAR-CUT favorites to sign him?

We should schedule a 6 hour meeting with Bryce just to be sure it’s not important and take as many variables off the table as possible.

did you read the article? jesus christ. i think we all agree nightengale is always wrong, but the logic they laid out is "phillies have long meeting. phillies brass feels good. nats are pulling back and no one else is being as aggressive."

edit: why am i doing this, derwood is derwooding in like 6 simultaneous threads. why do i put myself through this.

Then Nightengale’s headline should have been “Phillies feel confident after five-hour meeting with Harper”.

I’m quibbling with the leap to “clear-cut favorites”

I believe it is in the best interest of the Cubs for the Phillies to get Machado. If the Phillies don't get Machado, I don't see the Cubs being able to offer Harper nearly as much as they could offer him.

The best for the Cubs is and always has been getting both of these stud muffins

To be clear, my primary demand is that Ricketts stops being a cheap ass and carries through on the following plan:

They are going to bring him out during opening ceremonies of the convention like that year Wood came back.

I’ve contended this all along. Theo is fancy like that.

Still think Machado is the better signing anyway if he plays 3B.

If the Cubs sign Machado, Joe will move him around all over the friggin place.
