Harper is going to have some monster seasons in that park if they can get someone to hit behind him.

They have Realmuto to hit behind him

MLB radio this AM reported that Dave Roberts and members of Dodgers FO were in Vegas this weekend.

A) the Dodgers SHOULD be in on Harper. They have no reason not to be

B) that said, they are only offering a (reportedly) short-term deal, which there is little chance Harper takes, so this is just Boras trying to squeeze a few more million out of the Phillies

I'd actually like to see the contract Friedman and his team comes up with that keeps the Dodgers under the luxury tax and adds Harper.

thanks for clearing that up

The Dodgers, now, are a more reasonable team (unlike the Giants) to really bomb the market and give him some sort of insane short term deal. I still don't see it happening, but unless I'm mistaken, huge chunks of their remaining committed salaries come off in the next 1-3 years (Ryu, Turner, Hill, Martin, Jansen after 2021, Bailey's remaining, and Kemp - looking at sportrac right now). Gotta think even they could find a way to move Joe Kelly's contract if need be, unless he really falls apart.

With a solid system, few major contracts ... they could really bomb the market if they feel they could supplement things elsewhere. I mean, if they offered something like ... 4/160, I wonder if Boras and Harper's attention perk up). At a certain point, there's a number on the short term deal that's bound to get Boras/Harper's attention ... but it'd probably have to be pretty insane and record-breaking.

At the end of the day, I expect this will end the way people expected - Harper in Philly. It'd be an interesting team there, and a relatively wide-open NL East.

I still don’t see how a high AAV and low year deal is in his best interest, outside of some easily achieved options. Assuming he has $280-300+ million deals available. Lock in that guaranteed money, dude. But either way it’s ridiculous we can’t be in on negotiations in any way of it.

If someone really bombs him with a deal ... I mean ... something insane ... there's a certain price point where it'd be stupid to pass up on it at his age. To be fair, 4/160 might not be enough. It might have to be closer to 4/200 to even ring a bell. It'd probably have to even further. Yes, skill loss could happen. Injuries could happen. There should be a point on whatever internal analytical work they've done that it'd be hard to pass up on, considering Bryce's age. This isn't to say there is ... maybe they are that dead set against it, but if something insane came down the pipes, they should consider it.

Anyhow, truthfully, I don't expect that to happen.

Jon Heyman told a radio station that the other two teams who have checked in on Harper are the Cubs and the braves.

Either Ricketts, Theo, or the baseball writers are full of horsefeathers about this, and I'm tired of trying to figure out which it is

The only way it's in his interest is if there's not a mega-longterm deal, which seems unlikely. The only other explanation (and this wouldn't be in his best interest), is if pride (or Boras) won't allow him to accept a contract smaller than Macahdo. I don't know for sure how unethical Boras is, but I wouldn't be shocked to find that he'd council a player to choose 3 years at the highest AAV in history over 10 years at the second highest AAV in history.

What's funny is that these records are going to be broken most likely in the next year or 2 depending on Trout getting an extension or becoming a FA. I guess Harper could say that I held the record at one point or Trout doesn't care about that.

Mike Trout could get hit by a bus, or much less likely, suddenly start to suck, so I understand the allure of getting the record now. But not if it means leaving $150M+ on the table.

I can surely understand the appeal to Harper of being the top FA on the market not once, but twice. He's young enough that he could do it. What I don't understand is the appeal of a short-term deal when he'll surely get opt outs in his $350 million contract after 2 years, 3, 4 - whichever one he wants.

If indeed somebody like the Dodgers is really still in the game with a 4-year deal, then it's just a testament to how much Bryce doesn't want to play in Philadelphia.

I think he's getting the opt outs, but it's more year 5-7 instead of 2-4. Heck it could be possible that Philly isn't even giving him an opt out.
