Yeah I know "Prime Time Sports" is questionable but apparently they were reporting the Machado/Padres deal before it was widely reported

this is probably a lucky guess based on the highly public rumors of them being in talks at that point, not a scoop

aside from the years and dollars being wrong, based on rick hahn's own words, they were still in negotiations with the white sox at that point

Had a dream last night that after a busy day at work, where I couldn't be online, I finally checked the board and all you folks were losing your horsefeathers because the Cubs signed Harper. There was some kind of signing deadline in this dream, which forced him to make a pick...so it may not be an entirely accurate prophecy, however.

If true, San Diego will be doing a great job of shaming other owners by spending to win.

Hahahahahahaha..... owners have no shame.

Yeah but think of how much money they'll have committed after after the 2022 season.

The Padres signing both Machado and Harper and still finishing in last place would just be the best

haha padres are so stupid and bad i love to laugh at them for trying while rooting for my very cool and very good team with a broken offense and no interest in improving

What would really be the best is the Padres doing that, being awesome, stealing the division from LA, and maybe, just maybe, helping make it so we don't have to do this stupid 3-month-long free agency nonsense in the future.

why would that be the best

If Bryce was a true troll his signing to a bigger deal than Manny would have come out right now during Manny's press conference

A Bryce Harper signing at this moment would receive no attention thanks to Bob Kraft.

Counterpoint: Them signing Machado and Harper and immediately rolling the rest of the league and winning the World Series would be the best.

Players proving to ownership that investing big in the best free agents produces significantly improved baseball teams....definitely something I'm in favor of.

plus i don't really think "signing great players helps you win" is really a question that needs to be proven to owners. they just want to hold down salaries and winning isn't their top priority.

It does bizarrely need to be proven to fans though

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. SD having success in this hypothetical might help push some fans to side against penny-pinching owners.

Did you see what the Red Sox just did?

Obviously I want the Cubs to win the WS, and that the best case scenario. I was using a bit of hyperbole. But my point is that San Diego getting Harper and Machado should be something to be admired, not scorned. They're not the Yankees or the Red Sox or the Cardinals, and other than wear too much camo there's nothing about them makes me really hate them. So with the Cubs actively trying to make me dislike them all offseason long in one way or the other...I'll admit to the Padres bandwagon look a bit attractive.

i figured this much and wasn't really expecting an explanation for my snarky nitpicky reply
