If 240 is the line, that ought to be pretty easy to make work. Trading Zobrist and Kintzler would get payroll down to ~208, which ought to be plenty of room.

I suppose you could give Zobrist away and find a taker. Hate to do it but if it were for a top-tier FA I guess you would. But you'd have to attach a good prospect to Kintzler to unload him.

But seriously people - let it go already. NOT...GONNA...HAPPEN.

Well yeah. They've probably been trying to move Heyward and Chatwood. I don't think that's all that relevatory.

Where did he get the $240 figure from?

The second level of luxury tax penalties. I think it's a few million more than that(maybe that's leaving room for midseason), but for Twitter brevity purposes it makes the point.

Also, I can tell Theo exactly where he could've found an extra 20 million but if I start thinking about it again I'm gonna choke on my tongue.

So what will end up being the closest to the baller FA signing we all assumed/wished/hoped would be the SOP for the Cubs under the current regime? Heyward? Probably not, since he took less money. Yu? Eh; last year was the start of this current trend of offseason horse horsefeathers and he got lowballed.

I guess it's Lester. SNORE.

Without the Lester signing, none of the 2015-2018 stuff happens IMO so it's far from a snore. It's the most consequential FA signing in team history

I'm not saying he sucked or anything; it's just boring as horsefeathers. I didn't think the peak FA signing was going to be a mumbly, shiny-faced, giant baby man. I wanted the coolness of the Fowler re-signing, except on a stage that made other teams weep and get pissed.

man i dont know what has to happen to you to think that the lester signing was boring, even in retrospect. i feel like when that signing went down we all knew it meant we were finally serious and about to start winning a lot of games.

That was Heyward. The fact that he took less than the Cardinals were offering makes it even more so.

i went to find the lester thread and on the first page you have TT arguing that we should target Kenta Maeda instead. I love this forum.

my best post ever

id give shields $30m a year if he'd sign just a four year deal. Get two years out of him and suck it up and deal with the decline, it's perfect.

dont know why i dont have a job in the cubs FO

To be fair to Sofa, I think he's in a zone right now in that he's being negative about every aspect of the Cubs. I don't want to misquote him, but I think he even wrote the other day he'd get satisfaction by us finishing behind the Reds.

from reading back in that thread, i apparently still owe nocode a beer

And someone that started this whole nostalgia trip owes him a kiss on the mouth and promised to buy a Pearl Jam album.

and bless you Kyle, never change....

I'm either happy or sad depending on what Lester signs for, how we follow up on it, and what would have happened in alternate universes where we don't sign him.

Sure, it was the first big step, it was exciting at the time, and it paid off big. But in retrospect I didn't think the baller FA run would be so brutally short and unimpressive.

And yes, that's what she said. THAT'S WHAT THEY ALL SAID.
