I don't know if I buy that, but even if true Puig was still the only guy available anywhere close to as fun as Harper.

Peralta was worth nearly 4 WAR last year. Puig hasn’t been worth that much or more since 2013.

Check their projections

Didn’t realize that and also Peralta was 31 vs Puig 28. For some reason I thought Peralta was closer to 26-27.

And don't get me wrong, Peralta is good and basically exactly what this team needs. He's just the boring responsible choice compared to Puig and particularly Bryce who both literally piss charisma

Unlike with the Cubs there is actual evidence that the Dodgers want to stay under the luxury tax, I'm staying off the ledge for now.

Is there any chance this isnt Harper to Dodgers now? What would their OF be without Harper right now?

Jeff Passan is saying that this move alone won't clear up enough space to sign Harper and stay under the tax, but it certainly makes it a lot easier to swing a trade to clear the remaining.

Hypothetically they could use this space on multiple other free agents rather than just Harper but its hard for me to see a team making a move like this if they weren't trying to get a generational talent.

Edit: Also their OFs are something like Enrique Hernandez, Joc Pederson, Andrew Toles and Chris Taylor. They will be almost assuredly acquiring another OF.

Maybe they cleared money so that they could trade for Heyward.

homer bailey takes the mound, ron. homer ... now there's a name you really *don't* want to have as a pitcher

I can't argue with that partner

Between the general managers meetings and winter meetings this time around?

‘‘Fair question,’’ GM Jed Hoyer said. ‘‘Nothing has changed in that regard.’’

That explains the message the Cubs delivered during their lengthy meeting with Scott Boras, Harper’s agent — as long as three hours, by some accounts — as he and Harper made the rounds with interested teams.

Sources say Epstein urged them to wait before accepting an offer from another team until the Cubs had a chance to try to move some payroll off the books and check again with ownership.

Was just coming to post that. Good stuff.

The market is starting to slim if the Dodgers are really more focused on guys like Kluber. There were indications that Harper wasn’t really interested in Philly and the Phillies were more focused on Machado. The White Sox could outbid us but if the offers are close I think we know where he’d prefer to sign. Yankees are also a threat even though they have repeatedly said they weren’t in on him. The field would include teams like the Angels I guess but overall it really seems like we’ve gotten just enough info leaked from the Cubs side to know that they want to get him, and based on how things are playing out, he’s there for the taking. So like let’s get him

Yeah hopefully it’s true it’s more Kluber, a Realmuto, Pollock, Castellanos, Haniger types the Dodgers are after with their money they opened up. I still have my doubts they aren’t really in in Harper but good to hear.

I can’t see him taking 4/5 years unless he’s literally getting $45-50+ mil a year (which just doesn’t seem possible). He’d be leaving too much money on the table. Someone (hopefully us) will eventually go 9-12 years in the low to mid $30s on aav.

If there's an opt out in those 4/5 years, he might think about it with all that money up front and still be able to become a FA at 29 years old. Then again he might take the deal without opt outs since he would only be 30/31 years old with a lot of earning potential still ahead of him.
