Although Harper will be younger when he hits free agency than Bryant will be, I think this probably is a good starting point to what Boras will be asking for if the Cubs hope to extend Bryant before he becomes a free agent.

He's so ours

2019 Cubs

Rizzo, 1B

Baez, 2B

Russell, SS

Bryant, 3B

Schwarber, LF

Almora, CF

Harper, RF

Lester

Hendricks

Ohtani

WhoCares

WeWin

Bench: Not Heyward because Theo's thugs that put Hammel on bereavement list force him to opt out.

Gross, not for those dollars

He'll be worth it or come damn near close and probably have an opt out around age 31 season

He was worth almost twice as much in 2015, haha.

About 70% as much in a down year in 2016.

I think a good part of this is the Nationals "negotiating" through the media a bit, if that's what you want to call it. They know/knew about how much it would take, there were a ton of articles last year saying Bryce would/could be the first $500+ million contract on top of them seemingly planning for it by going with the payment schedule to Scherzer and Strasburg (I think they did it with his too) that pay them well beyond their playing days. On top of this being 2 years away. He'll definitely hit FA and isn't signing anything early but they know the likely cost.

It will be interesting to see if or how the value of a win changes with the new CBA and its unofficial salary cap

I'd love to have Harper in a Cubs uniform just as much as everyone else, but at 40M a year? I don't see it. If Heyward sticks around, you'd have 100M between him, Lester, Zobrist and Harper. KB, Addy, Hendricks and Baez are all going to be in year two of arbitration in 2019. Schwarber and Edwards (potential closer dollars) in year one.

I just can't see the Cubs committing such a massive chunk of payroll to one guy when they have so many guys that could start to get really, really expensive very quickly.

That length/AAV for a contract is potentially crippling if it goes bad. I don't think Harper is as much of a sure thing as Trout, and I'm not even sure he's a whole lot better than KB going forward

not to say anything of harper, but pretty much nothing is going to be potentially crippling to the cubs financially anywhere in the near or long term.

they're pretty much non existent when you have as much surplus value as they cubs do (though they're going to have to pay up for pitching) tied up in cost controlled players, a huge windfall in TV money coming when the team is the most popular it's ever been, and the cherry on top of a sellout everyday at the league's highest ticket prices.

There's also savants running this team from a business and operational stand point along with a [expletive] Ricketts in the White House. There are no limits

cue Yankees.

Yeah, I think everything they're doing is setting up for Harper and Machado.

It's cool because the Cubs will get Otani and probably one of Trout/Kershaw.

horsefeathers pitchers but ill take Trout.

This seems like a major pipe dream to me. Great player no doubt, but I have almost zero interest in him at his proposed price point. Regardless of how much money is printed at Wrigley, the Cubs aren't going to launch their payroll into the stratosphere and into the nasty tax range. If you're expecting that, I'd wager you're going to be disappointed.

So this is going to be a year long saga it sounds like, might as well bump this old thread and use it as the defacto Harper news/rumors thread.

For anyone concerned with the recent Boras talks with Nats owners:
