I loved this one moment where Theo was given the World Series trophy, let it rest on his head for a few seconds like a crown, while closing his eyes

Deadspin just put something up about it:

Some fancy restaurant in Chicago prepared a 9 1/2 pound goat for Epstein and Hoyer and delivered it to them personally like some sort of baseball kings. Now I’m wondering if Epstein had some of Babe Ruth’s remains exhumed for his consumption after the Red Sox’s 2004 World Series win.

More emotional Theo:

Exactly three months before Halloween, Theo Epstein was so pissed off at himself he started to bang on street signs. It was July 31, the day before the trade deadline, and the St. Louis Cardinals were threatening to winnow the Cubs’ National League Central division lead, once 12½ games, to 5½. And Epstein thought it was all his fault.

A left-hander named Brian Matusz, like Arrieta a former Baltimore pitching prospect, started for the Cubs that night. Chicago was trying to build organizational depth and figured Matusz a safe risk, especially after he had pitched well at Triple-A. Matusz allowed a two-run homer in the first, second and third innings, and Epstein, hunkered down for days in trade talks, needed some fresh air. He and Hoyer decided to take a walk. They ended up going for miles – talking, self-flagellating and whacking signs out of frustration. Never again would he do this, put at risk the dynamic of the clubhouse Maddon spent so long building for a flight of fancy.

“I felt like I had personally cost the team a game in the pennant race,” Epstein said.

“He took it personally,” Hoyer said.

“I took it very personally,” Epstein said.

“We were too cute about it,” Hoyer said.

“We overthought it,” Epstein said.

In the eighth inning, Epstein headed down to the Cubs’ clubhouse, ready to own his mistake face to face with the players. He refused to run from his errors. If he wanted the respect of players, he needed to face them.

Then something happened. Chicago scored three runs in the ninth inning to tie Seattle. The Cubs didn’t allow a run for the next three innings. And in the bottom of the 12th, they won on a walk-off squeeze bunt by Jon Lester. And even though the team he assembled absolved him then the same way they did Chapman in Game 7, Epstein went up to the Cubs players after the game and promised: That will not happen again.

Must have been awkward for matusz

Early in the game, two fans sitting near Epstein were harassing him and his family. He asked them to stop. They refused. He summoned security. Before being escorted out, a woman doused Epstein and his son with a cup of beer.

What the horsefeathers.

I remember Boston catching some horsefeathers for hiring him, as a 28 year old, Ivy leaguer. The meatballing was pretty strong. I wonder what kind of looks you'd have gotten if you had told all the idiots that hated the hire, that that kid was breaking the Red Sox streak, winning a second title, then going to the Cubs and breaks their streak too.

He's horsefeathering 42. Seriously, what's his motivation now? There's nothing left that can come close to what he's already done.

That was exactly what I thought when I read that last week. I just pictured them getting security to escort Matusz out before Theo came in to apologize for his presence.

My guess is the vets thought Theo was weird for doing that. What MLB team doesn't occasionally have to throw out a starter they'd rather not see start in the big leagues?

And yet they still kept Matusz in the minors.

I figure he builds the Cubs into a dynasty and then decides he wants Manfred's job and just, I dunno, takes it.

Cleveland's experiment with "sabrmetric football" will fail and there will be a backlash. Theo will spend the next 2 years figuring out the market inefficiencies of the game and take over the Bears in 2019. After the super bowl win in 2021 he will become mayor in a landslide, providing him more than enough time to bone up on his public speaking ability to run for president in 2028, at age 55.

Sounds good. Prefer 2032 though, so he can fix the Bulls.

I keep seeing this storyline from bitter fans of other teams that Theo isn't a baseball genius because anyone can win with an unlimited budget. When has he had an unlimited budget in Chicago?

The only worthy way to win is to develop all your 10th rounders into superstars that you sign to early extensions and win with a 50 million payroll and no free agents. Unless you could've spent more then you're tanking until you're good, or something, my mental gymnastics are rusty.
