we'll probably never have a better team than this, and we'll probably never have a more favorable world series matchup. i am not just happy to be here. we're blowing it, again.

horsefeathers you lackey, and horsefeathers you cubs

That's what I'm worried about. So many things went right this season and now they're losing to a team missing two of its three best pitchers and one of their two best players.

None of the matchup crap matters much. We will keep getting spins at the wheel and hopefully get our number pulled a time or two. Could still happen this year even.

The 2004 and 2006 Cardinals are probably the best example of this.

Maybe I have the wrong dude but I thought you said it was gonna take a 3-1 comeback. We're gonna do this horsefeathers.

Prior to last night's game, USSoccer was taking heat for thinking that the wind blowing out would negatively affect the approach of our young hitters. I didn't think it would, but watching the game and looking at the percentage of swings they took at pitches outside of the zone, I think that's exactly what happened.

Being beaten outright I can accept, but giving away a game you should win by abandoning the approach that brought you success all year is just infuriating.

Who takes responsibility for this - players, Mallee, Maddon, front office?

Do we need to assign blame? It's a very young team that was pressing against very good pitching.

The front office, Joe and the hitting coach? They won 103 games and are struggling in the World Series. What "responsibility" are you looking for?

I don't know what the pitches / plate appearance was for the game but it seemingly was 0-2 for many AB's. Not the approach that got us here. Rizzo doubles to lead off an inning and BZ, Willy and Addy fail to get him home. horsefeathers - Rizzo didn't even advance to 3rd. All around, it's been a shitty performance and I really don't think Cleveland is that much of a juggernaut.

It blows my mind that people still just don't understand baseball to this extent. This team lost games to the horsefeathering brewers FFS. I'm sad (and hopeful) and mad about this game but I'm not mad at the players or looking to blame someone.

we know, it's just not enough to ease the pain

Meh. Hopefully Maddon will do some inspirational horsefeathers and the kids will start having fun again. Otherwise, NL champs is still pretty cool.

If we win tomorrow, hopefully Joe can institute a dress up for the plane ride to Cleveland or bring in a magician.

Can the magician get on base?

Yeah I know. It sucks. But we got this still.

Also, I take back what I said. I'm mad at Lackey. horsefeathers that guy.

I guess if you told me before the season that my team would be in a position to win the world series if they win three straight games, I'd take that every time.

For this team, I'm not so sure about that. What would you have put the Cubs odds of winning the World Series at going into the season, and how does that compare to the odds of winning 3 straight games against another championship-caliber team?

Probably fairly close. But at least I've locked in league championship and getting to see my team in the World Series.

538 has the Cubs as a 15% chance to win the Series now. For comparison's sake, Fangraphs had the Cubs at 17.4% before they played a game this year. The Dodgers were the only other team above 10%.

The horsefeathers up thing is this: We've got a big pitching advantage tomorrow. And if we win, we've got a decent advantage in game 6 too.

Which makes last nights 1-0 loss even more tough to take.

We won three in a row 18 times this year. Lets do it again.

Speaking of the odds, I saw on twitter yesterday someone said something like, "Even if the Cubs lose this game, we've still got something like an 18% chance of winning the World Series. And that's still better than pretty much every day that we've been alive."

I was pretty much distraught during that game and resigned to a fate of losing. But I don't want to go out like that. We laid a turd going out last year. Let's not do it again. I don't want that taste in my mouth, coming from my favorite team ever -- a team that is better than any team I've ever followed, the best team in baseball.

So we have to win three in a row. Big deal. I still think we've got favorable matchups. For one, we don't have to see Lackey's stupid face again. Lester's got this tomorrow. Just win that one first. Focus on one at a time. It's not some monumental task. They are throwing two shitty pitchers, both on short rest. And then they are throwing a beast on short rest. But he'll be on short rest for the second consecutive outing. And he already looked diminished last night. Sure, he might be going from being invincible to nearly invincible. But it gives me some hope. We have our three studs lined up. And they could do something magical.

FanGraphs currently has their odds at 17.4%. Their odds were 16.4% on October 5th, and were in the 15-20% range for most of the year.

So, the odds the Cubs win three straight games right now are basically viewed the same as the Cubs' title chances were when entering the playoffs.

It's weird to think that while we feel completely miserable, the Cubs' chances for the big prize are really no different than when they felt unstoppable a month ago. Of course, it also highlights how hard it is to run the playoff gauntlet and get to this point no matter how good your team is, and how you want to really take advantage of that special opportunity when you get it. Let's hope they find a way to do so.
