Speaking of the playoff roster. Why not Almora over Szczur?

Judging by their usage since Almora's recall, AA appears to be higher on the depth chart.

Though Szczur is faster if they're thinking of using him exclusively as a pinch runner.

Because Szczur can hit and Fowler isn't going to get pulled for defensive purposes.

Can he, though?

Against LHP, yes, which is all he'd be asked to do in a short series. Soler hitting well and Baez's defense, flexibility, and offensive potential means the non-Baez portion of the bench is basically whoever they want to catch and various pinch hitters.

to what JD is talking about, has Jake even been appreciably better with montero catching?

That would be difficult to suss out considering that Montero exclusively caught the early good-Jake starts.

In the second half, Montero has caught Jake 5 times: 33.2 IP, 19 H, 8 ER, 28/9 K/BB, 2 HR

Only start with more than 2 runs given up was the game at the Cell.

Wow.

Eh, I guess. I don't mean to diminish Szczur too much. I like him. But the idea of him being "pinch hit guy" is just a little gross to me. I also like the idea of an Almora/Fowler/Heyward late inning defense. I like that Almora has that one elite skill.

It doesn't matter too much to me, though. We've got a lot of nice options. And they all fill various roles that make them each intriguing in different ways.

horsefeathers it. i'm far from a big pitcher/catcher pairing guy but willson hasn't been good enough and montero has lately for it not to be worth trying.

montero is also the second best framer in baseball this year. given jake's movement, that might be key.

Funny thing is that in an interview on ESPN 1000 this week jake was asked his optimal defense when pitching and he listed Contreras as catcher. Not that it means anything.

I think we are looking too hard for excuses for Jake, but I will defer to the people I've quoted whose opinions I trust

That outfield is pretty great, but on the whole I think you get to a similar spot by bringing in Javy and moving Bryant(or even Zobrist) to the OF. I don't trust Almora's bat at all for this postseason so I don't think that dream outfield is worth punting the roster spot offensively.

it's kinda funny how good a relationship the org/fans seemingly have with randy hundley compared to how things went with his son

who is making excuses? we're just grasping at straws to try to optimize his starts as much as possible.

He probably understands that his son was a horsefeathering drunk too.

I want terrible things to happen to Scooter Gennett

he can't, like, clear waivers and join our NLDS opponent or something can he?
