My bold prediction. The nearly as lowly Saints finally part ways with Sean Payton. Pace drops Fox, signs Payton, and drafts his QB for him to mold. Jay is traded for a couple mid round picks.

that would be a real ballsy move for a relative neophyte like Pace with a terrible track record to try and pull off. Give a veteran head coach a garbage team and back-to-back wasted first round picks and then kick him to the curb when things go predictably bad, only to give the job to the coach whose team has been falling apart for nearly as long as the Bears have and largely because of a poor "pro personnel decisions", which was your department at that team.

True, then again, if he's picking a QB with a high pick thats all thats really going to matter in evaluating him.

Then again it's a bold prediction because it has like 1% chance happening.

Bold prediction number two. We keep Fox until he retires due to heart issues. This I put at better odds. 25%

Maybe Fox will go full Lou Brown and have a heart attack while ripping his team this year...

So...chances that was Cutler's last game as a Bear?

Greater than 0, but I'm guessing the thumb injury is maybe 25% a 2-3 week issue, 60% a 6-8 week issue and 15% a season ender. Even if it's a longer term issue you can almost guarantee that the next guy will get hurt and Cutler will be forced into action late in the season.

lol, just lol. What else can you say. A mediocre roster gets bombarded with important injuries and its over.

It altogether strains my interest to even passively follow the Bears when the Cubs are doing what they're doing.

So of Jay is seriously hurt, who we tanking for, Watson?

Watson isn't good enough to tank for.

Well maybe not intentionally, but we are where we are.

Who's looking like top 5 picks is the real question?

I didn't consider it mediocre. I kind of figured Fox would "coach them up" to 7 wins or so. But I think mediocre is too nice of a term for the true overall talent level.

one source has:

Kizer - QB

Garrett - DE

Watson - QB

Fournette - RB

Barnett - DE

Kiper's big board has:

1. *Myles Garrett, DE, Texas A&M

2. *Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU

3. *Malik McDowell, DT, Michigan State

4. Jonathan Allen, DE, Alabama

5. Tim Williams, OLB, Alabama

PFF goes:

Cleveland Browns: Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson

San Diego Chargers: Myles Garrett, OLB, Texas A&M

Jacksonville Jaguars: Derek Barnett, DE, Tennessee

San Francisco 49ers: Desmond King, CB, Iowa

Tennessee Titans: Jalen Tabor, CB, Florida

Hey, at least he's trying to make them debacle-bad, instead of just dull-bad.

I just love when defensive guys yell at offensive guys, or vice versa. Him being in street clothes just makes it all that much better.

Myles Garrett might be considered a better prospect coming out of the draft than Clowney was his year (I'm just talking about how well each was thought of on draft day).

Anyone think it was bad luck for Pace to have Fox fall in his lap? He built this roster around the HC who probably was not his 1st pick but couldn't pass up the chance to get him. At this point, I'm for blowing it up again and developing an organizational philosophy followed by everyone. This thing is too disjointed and that starts from above Pace.

despite mixed results from fangio (a fair assessment given the talent he's had) and the fact that gase is 0-2 in miami, i still really wish we could've landed a gase HC fangio DC pairing, which, iirc is what gase wanted to do in SF

No, I don't really think it was bad luck. And I don't really agree that the problem is a lack of organization philosophy. It seems fairly obvious they were going for a younger, faster defense and counting on a solid run game with the occasional deep threat, a standard play not to lose mentality.

the problem is talent at key positions. The offensive tackles suck, the defense cannot rush the passer.

Pace, whose history is in scouting guys already in the NFL, has not been a good drafter, and frankly I have no reason to believe he was capable of making a better hire than Fox. He looked for stability.

If there is one encouranging thing about Pace's drafting, its been his picks outside the first round, as well as UDFAs. But you can't swing and miss on multiple top ten picks. Not that its too late for them to turn it around, but eaely returns are not promising, and there was plenty or criticism at the time so its not just 20/20 second guessing.

Regarding his coaching pick. Yea, he went safe.

Pro personnel? He did a good job at his two ILB pickups. Outside of that... pretty meh over both years.

Its too early to re-blow it up, is the unfortunate truth. Pace kind of just did that. Just in a slow White Soxish way, instead of setting a torch to it, like Theo. For continuity alone, you kind of need to let Pace see this shitfest through. If for no other reason than it could scare off potential good hires next go round, if they think going in, that their leash is THIS short. After Emery, it'd suck to can another guy this fast.

I really wanted to give Pace the benefit of the doubt. Hell, let him fire Fox. I don't care. But Goony is 1000% right. He's not a good drafter. And we definitively need that. I guess I'd give him a 3rd year, but I'd expect to suck next year too. With the slight hope of hitting on a top 5 pick this upcoming draft and letting the new guy make the following one.

To me, the only silver lining is that if you bring in the right group, there's really no such thing as a rebuild in the NFL. If Pace were good, we'd be a true playoff contender right now. We aren't, and he isn't. Time to sell off what we can and I really wish it'd be for 2018 picks, since I don't see us firing Pace until then.

Isn't that basically the exact same flaw as Angelo? Good with late round picks, terrible with high picks.
