After the longest day off in history, the Cubs are set to face the Athletics of Oakland after sweeping the Marlins in dramatic fashion. And by dramatic fashion, I mean one of the worst pitching meltdowns of the year that was capped by one of the worst wild pitches ever thrown in history. HISTORY!

The Cubs will be facing off against Dillon Overton

This son of a bitch is clearly the owner of several Abraham Lincoln costumes, which can be the only reason he's kept this beard since he was last in college 3 years ago.

He's also the proud owner of this MLB stat line:

Meanwhile, we have our ace-caliber salaried #2 Jon Lester going for us.

The legends say that when he posed for this picture he became such a method performer that he maintained this pose and only this pose 24 hours a day in preparation for his battle tomorrow against Dillon Overton.

Just kidding, he wouldn't waste his time on preparing for a match against Dillon Overton. He just ate wings and drank beer like true American should. Here's what Lester's numbers look like:

W L ERA G GS IP BB SO ERA+ FIP WHIP H9 HR9 BB9 SO9 SO/W
11 4 2.95 21 21 128.1 38 125 135 3.89 1.106 7.3 1.2 2.7 8.8 3.29

He's doing alright I guess. I mean he's no Dillon Overton.

Also, I had mentioned that the special win yesterday was going to warrant a special game thread. My intentions were to insert footage from the walk off wild pitch over the scene in Major League where the Indians beat the Yankees at the end and poorly dub over Uecker's voice with a droll "Cubs" every time he said "Indians", but I couldn't make it work. Oh well.

Anyways, keep winning Cubs. I know we're in Oakland and it's a cavernous pit of despair and sadness in that ballpark, but I hope we can hit at least one dong off the guy who has given up 9 of them in only 18 innings.

Dillon Overton is definitely the name of a comic book character that is destined to fall into a vat of chemicals and become a wittily named supervillian. The Overton Window or something.

Anyway he has a 9 ERA so that means he'll throw 7 IP of 0 R ball before the Cubs score 5 runs in the 8th and win.

I want to see Rizzo and Bryant recreate that Predator handshake, and then Ross is just lurking in the background ranting about being a [expletive] sexual Tyrannosaurus.

We are going to dong the hell out of this kid and it is going to be glorious.

Unless I'm missing something IT'S BEEN A WEEK SINCE WE'VE HIT A DONG! WE NEED SOME DONGS! Though if we just win all the time I suppose I can handle that.

I had no idea Cookie Crisp was still alive.

coco crisp is close enough to coco krispies that there's no need to go with cookie imo

Clearly I need to go down the cereal aisle more often. I didnt even know Coco Crispies existed. Ive always had the dilemma of associating him with Cocoa Puffs or Cookie Crisps.

I'm surprised he's never done an ad campaign with Kelloggs.

Going to this one. Super pumped. Spent the last week learning how to surf in Santa Cruz with my buddy and at Yolsemite for a few days. Also went to Giants/Nationals last Saturday. Awesome trip. Awesome places. Only downside was not watching any of this sweet ride for the Cubs, but I'll live with it.

A look back: In 2004, Athletics and Cubs played each other.

Cubs were down 2-3 to the Athletics. Michael Barrett doubled in the bottom 9th, scoring Todd Hollandsworth and Todd Walker to win the game 4-3.

I can't find a clip anywhere, but I'm sure they'll show it sometime during the broadcast with Hollandsworth lounging around CSN and everything.

Apparently Jesse Rogers said Soler is with the team and is likely to be activated for a reliever. He has already seen Grimm and Edwards at the park so he's not sure who will go down. (of course that doesn't mean its not Grimm or Edwards but if it is they haven't been informed yet). If not Grimm or Edwards the only other options I see are Montgomery to AAA (assuming he has options) or Nathan DFA.

I'm getting this second hand from twitter, it seemed like they were saying a move would happen before the game, but possibly not until tomorrow. FWIW Soler was in Chicago yesterday getting evaluated by Cubs team doctors to make sure he's healthy, so him being activated is imminent and I'm sure they'd like to get him back at DH while they have the option.

Oh and yes I know he's hitting .167 in AA and probably should spend another month down there.

Especially on a Friday night when I watched the games while pre-gaming and by the time it was over I had a solid buzz and it was time to go out.

Now I give it a 50% chance I'm awake when the game ends. And to think I used to make fun of old people for not being able to stay up until midnight
