Honestly, this worked out pretty great. Instead of Tommy wilting away in Iowa for a month, with everyone asking questions about why he was still down there when he's proven to be a big league player, we get this. Tommy takes a vacation and then reports to the minors and gets acclimated to baseball again. And then the rosters expand almost immediately. Edited August 17, 2016 by Duke Silver

Tennessee is just a short swim down the coast from Jersey for him to the Carolinas then he can probably navigate his way inland through various rivers, lakes, streams, etc. or else if there's no route in from the Carolinas one of these can just be waiting there to drive him to Tennessee

Elsewhere in 'probably not DL-worthy injuries that make it simpler for us to manipulate the 25 man roster', Coghlan is DLed with a rib contusion and Patton is up to replace him, presumably until La Stella(who I'm told looks like a seal, iirc) is in game shape.

Coghlan back to the DL the day that LaStella decides to report to AA. Patton has been called up because of the thin bullpen that was used a lot yesterday. He will probably pitch once or twice and then get sent back down once LaStella is ready.

Coghlan has to hit the DL because the pen is thin with us going to a 6-man rotation. Patton stays up for a couple days until they sign Papelbon. We keep Coghlan, La Stella, and Smith and bring them all back when rosters expand.

I know we make a lot of jokes at La Stella's expense, but I really hope he doesn't retire at the end of the season. I don't understand his frustration with the game or whatever is going on, but he's a useful player and a good hitter. Teammates seem to like him. Excellent pinch-hitter.

 

Not my favorite player by a long shot, but he will be missed if he decides to hang'em up for good.
