7/19 - Mets (Syndergaard) @ Cubs (Arrieta) 6:05 CDT ESPN (out-of-market), CSN-C, SNY

Posted

Tomorrow the Cubs play & Jake Arrieta is scheduled to pitch.

Let's get one thing clear. Jake is pissed.

http://l1.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/zYNe2zb_TSBSn88TO2w.2w--/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjtzbT0xO3c9NzQ0O2g9NDk2/http://media.zenfs.com/en/homerun/feed_manager_auto_publish_494/e870b9ff826aec4bbbc7d0f5d1d0e79b

He's not been his usual baseball-throwing-Jesus self in quite some time. And quite frankly he sets his own bar just a tick higher anyway. tomorrow that all changes. For whatever reason whenever he witnesses cole hamels defeat the cubs at wrigley it sets something inside him on fire. don't believe me? Just take a look at jake's stats from last year after the cubs were no hit by hamels (fangraphs and/or baseball reference should have these stats no problem). Maybe his name should actually be COAL hamels for this reason.

Be prepared to be very excited by Jake's start in a good kind of way. I predict he not only will be good, but he will be razor sharp.

VS.

The hated Mets & Noah Syndergaard is scheduled to pitch.

Syndergaard spelled backwards is Draagrednys. Which to me sounds a little like dragon. but TIL after a bit of research and common sense he's actually instead just the boring love child of the geico caveman and a lion.

the cubs are obviously in the mets heads and only the staunchest of mets fans would even bother sticking by their side at this point and supporting them in any manner

I own a Mets shirt

Cubs win 6-1.

This is a game that could really turn the tide of the head to head if we can win it. I expect Jake to step up.

We swept the Mets in the regular season last year.

Jake stat:

According to research by ESPN Stats & Information, hitters are averaging a .795 OPS (on-base plus slugging) in 2-1 counts and only .509 in 1-2 counts. That’s dramatic, but Arrieta’s results are miles apart when the count changes. At 2-1, the opposition has an .835 OPS. But at 1-2, it falls to .306.

Correct, and then the playoffs turned the tide as their starters shut us down.

I'm not sure what 'turning the tide of the head to head' means and why that's at all important

So this tide....it can turn at any time? But this particular game is important? Until the next time they turn the tide back? Should we wait until the playoffs to turn the tide then?

We have to assert dominance over them or else they will only think of us as that team they swept in the nlcs. The regular season series this year will change that.

That's a fair point. It's very important for us to get our record this season against them to 2-4. That will show them.

(Assuming no sarcasm. If it was, just pretend this was directed to Rondon Fan)

I hate La Stella at 3B, he's terrible there defensively. But he's a better bet at the plate vs Syndergaard than Javy. Syndergaard is terrible at holding runners so I wouldn't be surprised to see more stolen base attempts out of us tonight than usual
