Thanks guys....I knew it didn't incorporate pitch framing (which explains why Montero is so low), but completely forgot about his LF time (which also probably adds to why Gattis is so low).

Well, that was pretty much everything I wanted to say in the Contreras piece I was planning.

What's the disconnect on those numbers from his -0.1 defensive rating that's going into his WAR calculation? For catchers with at least 190 PAs (to get his 196), only Flowers, Gattis, and Montero are worse (32 total).

That is largely a result of his 164 innings that have graded out poorly at a non-premium position (LF, where he has a -19.6 UZR/150). Bad grade at bad position = poor defensive WAR number.

Further, I don't believe FG is incorporating any sort of pitch framing gain into WAR as of yet.

Also, the numbers in that article are from Baseball Prospectus's catcher defense stuff, so none of that is making up part of his fWAR.

Gattis is also a terrible catcher.

So even with the 180 (bad) innings or so in LF deflating his value, Willson has been worth 2 fWAR in 75 games. That's very not bad at all.

Yes, and with Jake getting exploded the other day while Montero was catching maybe we see some more Willson in the playoffs. Seems like he's back to raking.

I don't think Willson catching Arrieta is a thing we're going to see.

Not counting on it but we'll see

Among Catchers with 250+ PA, Willson finished first with a 126 wRC+. Unbelievable. The next Yadi ready to Lord over the NLC.

You need to think a lot higher than freaking Yadi.

Well he does have the second most Catcher WAR of the 10's behind Posey. Of course hate him, but hoping Willson develops into an iteration of him isn't a terrible thing.

he was actually worth 2.0 fWAR in 48g as a catcher; his 24 game LF trial yielded basically replacement level output despite a really strong OBP there, cuz the D

as a C:

.291/.365/.525 (.319 babip), 137 wRC+, and did i mention he was Yadi & Lucroy's equal for framing (per statcorner)?

ho hum another star i guess we control through the start of the next decade

Holy horsefeathers is right. Contreras can catch full time. Nothing new here, but we can just platoon Schwarber and Soler in left next year and maybe give Schwarber an occasional start behind the plate.

I'm hoping Soler has another hot playoffs so the Cubs can sell high on him. He could be a very good player, but he just seems to be made of glass, and is definitely a guy that could be moved.
