So the Dodgers starting pitching outside of Kershaw and mostly Maeda has been disappointing, meanwhile the Giants are starting to run away with the division, while the Nat/Mets and Pirates are putting space between them and the Dodgers in the WC. It's of course early but if he's ready to start once, shouldn't he just join the rotation?

So he's only getting called up for 1 start? Is the service time that big a deal for them?

I doubt they care at all about his service time, I'm guessing he's been held down since they have like $1 billion worth of pitchers they are paying that they want to give shots to first but they are all mostly dead now.

He's never thrown more than 87 innings in a season. And he's already at 41 now. Friedman isn't going to kill him. My guess is he's not really a huge factor at the major league level this year.

We almost signed him, for those that don't know......The Dodgers were looking at Puig and he was at the complex, while they were looking at Puig. It was a private workout and the Dodgers threw out close to 2 mill to sign him and a few other Mexican League guys to grab him from us. Mainly due to packaging guys his trainer wanted signed that we knew nothing about. It happened before we got a chance to counter. And as a Mexican League player, he only got 20% of the bonus that was set for him.

Its hard to knock what we've done in IFA, but holy horsefeathers......If we had gotten him......

Urias is obviously a fantastic prospect, but he's a great example of how volatile pitching prospects are. He's 19, crazy advanced, amazing stuff, tearing up AAA ... and his career high in IP is 87.2. You still literally have no idea what you have with him. He's years away from even knowing if he can handle a SP workload.

Part of the reason his innings totals are so low is because he had to have some weird surgery, right? I want to say it was an eye injury, it wasn't anything arm/shoulder related.

He did have cosmetic surgery on his eye so he could open it wider, I believe, but the overwhelming reason his workfload has been so light has been an abundance of caution from the Dodgers. BBRef doesn't have pitch counts for all his games, but in those they do have he's never cracked 90 pitches, and his high this year is 82.

Yeah, the extreme caution plus the surgery have compounded to leave them in a bit of a dilemma. The caution was probably fine for when he was, like, 17. No need to get too out of hand. But, last year his workload should have been ramped up and the surgery threw a wrench into those plans. So, now, he is nowhere near ready for a major league starter's workload. And he is unquestionably ready for the big leagues. And their big league club is scuffling and could use his help. Tough situation, juggling all of those concerns. Do you leave him in AAA? Call him and cut his season short eventually? Throw him in the big league pen?

In a piece on Urias a few weeks ago discussing rumors the Dodgers would break him into their big league bullpen, I believe BA said he has never hit 90 pitches or thrown more than 6 innings in a single game.

I wonder if they would look to piggy back him with someone if/when some of the rotation guys who are hurt start coming back. McCarthy will obviously be on a tight leash when he comes back so maybe him and Urias piggy back start for the season come July.

That might be a really good idea.

The main problem for them is this, though. There's really nothing they can do this year to have him ready to be a workhorse in the rotation next year, even. It's going to be a little frustrating for them trying to find a nice and steady routine for him while balancing all of their needs and concerns.
