Well teams were bound to come a calling eventually.

not the first time, won't be the last

of course, if i were mcleod, i would've preferred to go to SD than minnesota

if we win it this year, he's gone, i bet. if we don't, i'd lower the odds.

Is it okay to wish a preventable fire upon the jackass Cardinal announcer who, after the last out of a 1-hitter that gives the cubs a 17 game lead over a team that wouldn't make the playoffs if the season ended today, that said " I still think we see the cubs in the playoffs and beat them?"

asking for a friend. . . .

BCB asked who everyone's favorite 2016 Cub is and the results are interesting I guess. Most things at BCB suck but there is a sheer high volume of responses so interesting to see. #mildlyinteresting

Wasn't quite sure where to post this, it's a couple years old but quite interesting, in that it describes some of McLeod's philosophy/approach. With the possibility that he might leave soon, it seemed timely to share.

As someone who works in the field of psychology, I found this tidbit particularly interesting:

“If the talent is similar – and even sometimes when it’s not – the guys who truly love to play are what you want. They’re going to get the most out of their ability. For an amateur scout, that’s a hard thing to get at. When one of our scouts beats other teams on a player, very often it’s on the makeup – how the guy is wired. Some area scouts have a way of really getting to know a player — as well the people the player is surrounded by – and those are the scouts who usually make hay.”

Hahahahaha our reigning Cy Young winner who has been the 17th best pitcher in baseball this year and is almost universally regarded as a cool guy is the 7th favorite player. Can you imagine like, the White Sox 7th favorite player?

Panicked article of the day:

http://chicago.suntimes.com/sports/beware-cubs-fans-100-win-teams-almost-never-win-it-all-in-mlb/

It is kind of strange that 9 of the last 15 100 win teams lost in the LDS. Perhaps we should lose 12 more games to ensure we don't win 100.

kidding of course

Saw the Sun-Times people tweeting that article out earlier, and replied with Verducci's "super team" article. I did not get a reply.

what's fun is that someone could throw out like the 10th best player on the team as his favorite and it's not really laughable

what's also funny about that poll is that hendricks is cool and good and all but he's so objectively boring in every way (especially compared to any of his teammates) that it's hilarious for him to even get a lot of votes, let alone win in a landslide.

basically what i mean is i would be less shocked if a terrible but fun player were winning...like kawasaki, if he'd been on the team more, or something. hendricks being very good but not one of our 4-5 best players plus also being boring and on the same team as a bunch of fun cool guys should be a virtually perfect recipe for very few votes.

He's so unique though. I think that's what makes him the most popular. You watch him and you can count on one hand the number of people you've seen in your lifetime that you've seen with his repertoire and his success level.

I think that is also a major link with the next two on the list. Baez is incredibly unique (his tags, his avoiding tags, swinging with reckless abandon) and Bryant is just so good that while he's fairly conventional he still draws lots of anticipation for his at-bats.

Was he even an option? Hard to have a guy be your favorite player in a season he hasn't played.

He played 3 games. And it seems like people are often asking if there's any chance he can make a return in the playoffs.

Well sure...but I don't know how you can have watched this team the whole season and then say Schwarber is your favorite player of 2016. Love the guy but come on...this team has been amazing without him.

Posted

because favorite is a subjective thing and doesn't necessarily have to do with on field play. i wouldn't personally have him first, but there probably aren't 10 guys on this squad i'd put ahead of him (even though he's only played 3 games or whatever)

hell, i'd understand schwarber winning that poll more than i do hendricks. so horsefeathering weird.

Posted

I'd vote our Cy Young candidate as my favorite player before the guy that played in 3 games.

For a guy to win my favorite player of the year he kinda has to play. If he were to have some miracle playoff return (not gonna happen folks), then I reserve the right to revisit this.
