Straight pull. And I can feel myself doing it with my arms, so I think it's club path and not face. If it were face, I'd think it was gonna go straight and then it would mysteriously go left. These, I keep telling myself I'm gonna swing the club path away like going the opposite way with a baseball swing, and but as soon as I make contact I can feel myself yanking a pull (heyo).

I think something is getting out of sync between upper body, arms and lower body. Maybe too much arm in the swing?

this sounds backwards to me. ball goes direction of face at contact. if it's a straight pull, you're swinging out to in with the face on the swing path.

That's what is happening. I'm *trying* not to go out to in, but it's happening anyway.

sounds like you're early in your rotation.

I think you might be right.

Try to turn your shoulders completely on the backswing. An incomplete shoulder turn will always make your shoulders turn too early on the downswing.

All pullers of the ball are very upper-body dominant. They generally turn their shoulders 'hard' right from the top. Of course, this makes their club cut across the ball through impact.

I could be wrong, but I suspect this is me.

Lol, absurd

The videos of their swings side by side are amazing and hilarious.

That swing by swing was amazing. I’m now convinced Dechambeau and the rest of these youths are just the layover until Baby Tiger comes as fucks the golf world up.

The constant swing tweaking continues. I won't be able to get any rounds in while kid is on Christmas break, but he's willing to go with me to some range sessions as long as he gets the occasional turn (I'd give him all the turns he wants, but he's happy to one-hand a ball a few feet then call it a day).

This video is what finally helped me diagnose my pull:

I was trying to get my weight forward on my front foot, and it was causing my upper body to have a forward lean at impact. So what I want is weight toward front foot and moving forward through impact, hip out in front, but spine titled back slightly to create that ) shape in the side. I need to keep doing drills to get all that right. I'm worried it can overcorrect into a scooping motion if I'm not careful.

I also used some spray to see where I'm striking the ball, and I'm almost always missing it toward the heel. So I started standing just a little farther away.

Some other things I'm trying to incorporate:

1) Baseball grip instead of interlock. Interlock just hurts my fingers and the bottom hand never feels placed correctly.

2) Slightly more outward angle to the feet.

3) fuller hip turn to get the front shoulder down toward the ball at peak backswing

4) Drive the club with the trail hand rather than pull it with the lead hand

5) Derive power from pushing with my lead leg (without fully straightening it).

It's all very much a work in progress, but when I catch it like I'm trying to, it absolutely *flies*. Two months ago I was struggling to hit my 7-iron was generally a 95-yard carry club. Today I cleared 150 with it a few times, and I think I've got plenty of room left to improve that.

I was finally able to go out and play today after not being really able to due to either weather, work, or the courses being packed since the end of October. I'm visiting my parents and am due to head back to Chicago tomorrow, so even though it was kind of cold (mid 40s) we still went to the course they regularly play at near DC (Laytonsville MD). Played 9 holes + 2 more (1 and 9 again)

So, after not actually playing for almost 3 months, not going to a range since early December, and not even swinging a club for the last three weeks, how did I play?

The best 9 I've had in a while. Shot 41 (3 bogies, 1 double) on the 9 and parred the 2 extra holes. Had putts for birdies on multiple holes, but couldn't sink any. If it wasn't for my putting being rusty and a little offthe horrible condition of the greens, I might've cleared 40. The only issue I had was on the second par 5, and even then it was after a great drive and second shot (thinned my 3rd way over the green and then misjudged the shot back and hit it back over the green).

Kyle- How's the golf game coming along? Been able to get some rounds in lately?

In other news, I talked about making a career change and moving from Indiana later this year in the Politics thread. I'm actually going to apply for the PGA (actually called PGM Associate Program) to become a golf teacher/instructor/pro at a local course. Pretty excited about this change although I got a few things to do before I even get into the program.

Getting ready to do my background check/screening sometime this month and once I pass that (my brother said I should pass easily as I guess he did a background check on me when I told him I was thinking about applying for this job this past summer and have to do a background check first), I have to buy a package of 5 qualifying level courses so I can register for a qualifying test which I have to do within 6 months IIRC. I will keep you guys updated along the way.

I wasn't able to play over Christmas break, got one round in last week and my short game was absolutely gone. I completely forgot how hard to hit chips and putts.

My rec league hockey starts back up this week, and golf was a replacement for that, so suddenly the urge to go to the range is fading and the urge to go to the rink is rising.

I need to keep working on it, though. I'm hoping to do some kind of decent-sized golf trip in March when his mom comes to take him for a week.

anyone have a good suggestion on a portable club cleaner? It's gotten muddy and it hasn't even started raining yet. Would be nice if it doubles as a ball cleaner since those are all shuttered.

This is probably the closest to what you're looking for? I've seen a couple people with these although I've never had one personally so I can't say if it's any good or not.

Shot a 98 today and was pretty happy about it. Especially since I THINK I holed a shot from 120 yards out, but it bounced out with those blue foam things in the hole. Oh well. Played with my Dad and a rando. After an intro and chit chat we realized he was from the Chicago area in Wisconsin, and they both went to UW Oshkosh for college, and only a year apart. Had a bunch of mutual friends. Small world.

you mean to clear the grooves? i use a wire brush and some water to rinse it out, but that a) might technically violate some dumb rule and b) dull the grooves in your club face over enough time

edit: that thing in the link looks better than my harbor freight wire brush, haha. so for all those kids out there reading this on their dad's computer, don't be like me

Finau is just cursed/in his head at this point (he’s switching up his putter stroke like crazy). I feel bad for the guy, well as much as one can for a guy making millions to golf and firmly has his tour card for the rest of his career. He seems like such a good dude too. Guy just can’t close out even when all the metrics say he should have like 3-5 wins by now. Homa winning at his hometown course in LA was cool though and he seems like a decent dude.

God damn it. Hopefully he’s okay. He was interviewed Sunday at the tournament and looked kinda fucked up like he was drinking or using pills again and sounded pretty down and depressed discussing playing again anytime soon.

That doesn’t look good....
