Just wanted to share this gem from cards talk:

Reasons why Harper is attracted to STL...

Difference of why STL is a player in the Harper landing... (compared to other players)

1) grew up in Vegas. He doesn’t need the “bight lights, bells an whistles” like Stanton needed/wanted.

2) married. Not single like Stanton isn’t looking for off the field benefits.

3) at 26, he’s an old veteran.

4) his religion—even though Mormons are located (everywhere) the Midwest appeals more to the culture (I.e Bible Belt of Missouri).

5) friends with Kris. While it’s well documented that Harper and the northsider are friends, seeing each other 19 times within the division is enough. Just because your friend jumps off a bridge would you?

6) the most unpopular reason, that I don’t agree/disagree or I’m willing to discuss. He’s white. While race shouldn’t have anything to do with anything, the reality is it does. Latin players want to play in big cities.

Adam Wainwright's contract with the St. Louis Cardinals has been put on hold because it violates the maximum-cut rule, and the pitcher will have to become a free agent before the agreement can be finalized, sources told the Associated Press on Thursday.

The Cardinals announced the agreement with the 37-year-old right-hander on Oct. 11. He has finished a $97.5 million, five-year contract that paid $19.5 million annually.

Under baseball's labor contract, his guaranteed salary could not be reduced by more than 20 percent if he remains on the roster continuously. That means he would have to be guaranteed at least $15.6 million.

His new deal contains a salary less than that figure, sources told the Associated Press. The maximum-cut rule would not apply if he becomes a free agent following the World Series and then agrees to the new deal with the Cardinals.

While funny that the cards have to go through the rigamarole of sending Wainwright through free agency, this seems like something both GM's and agents should have been well aware of.

Seriously, we aren't putting those guys in deals for stars... Is there a single player in the cardinals org good enough to headline a deal for KB?

Most of us don’t, but a quick search will show you some embarrassing posts with Trout, Harper and Machado trade proposals centered around Almora, Happ, etc.

The Royals have hired former Cardinals manager Mike Matheny as a special advisor for player development.

Matheny will "contribute in a variety of areas that will include player development and scouting." It's worth noting that manager Ned Yost will be entering his final year under contract in 2019, so Matheny would figure to be a candidate to replace him if he doesn't return for 2020.
