If Iran was summed up in one song tonight it would be Hokey Pokey.

Madness. It seemed like both had an agreement and Algeria just went rogue at the end for some sweet revenge. But then Austria score a minute later. Wow.

I really hope the revenge thing is why they did it.

Somehow this makes not having Mexico and Canada in North America even worse.

???

Just realized that Mexico got Ecuador in the R32, which is a rough matchup. Second hardest behind Senegal according to the world rankings.

Yeah, though the fact that they're playing in Azteca (for the R16 too against England) is probably a big advantage for them.  They can be beaten there but in general it has a way of leveling Mexico up.  England especially is going to have an interesting time there if they both advance.  England's historical World Cup stumbles + playing a host team in a notoriously difficult Latin American stadium = trouble.

No official news release yet but some pretty reputable soccer guys are reporting Lewandowski has chosen to sign with the Fire after weeks of speculation.  He may not be in his prime, and attack might not have been the position the Fire most need but he's still been very good in Europe and will bring some needed visibility to the Fire franchise and enthusiasm to the fan base - particularly the huge Polish population here.

I'm guessing the hype for this will be somewhere in between Messi going to Miami and Son going to LAFC.

Really, nothing. Just a joke that you original didn’t have Mexico and Canada in NA in your post, before editing it. My joke fell short and now I feel like absolute horsefeathers. Sorry. 😞

Austria vs Algeria it has not been, but the match did liven up at the end of the half. Hopefully it picks up from here.

Thanks. I've only looked at the ESPN.com version of the bracket that doesn't give any seeding info

I'm sure I'm jinxing this, but there are some incredible second round matchups coming if things break the way they're 'supposed to'. Germany v France on 4th of July, Portugal v Spain, Mexico v England in Mexico City are all nuts.

Lesson to be learned from thr first two knockout games: Don't play like a coward hoping for PKs.

The pass before the cross that set up the Paraguay goal was absolutely fantastic and filthy.

I don't know enough about the rules to have an opinion if that was a foul against the goalie. In hockey, that would be goalie interference, but I don't know how it works in soccer. Half the time I feel like fouls are called on ticky-tack things while all out pushing and shoving isn't called. It's completely unclear where the line is

Paraguay have been playing for penalties since the halftime whistle. Let's see if they get rewarded for it.
