oh and yea, that's a foul on doherty. he isn't trying to play the ball and if he doesn't run into Forster, he catches it easily.

I'm aware that under the current rules it's a foul. I think the current rules should be changed because they favor the goalkeeper way too much.

Doherty isn’t late. He arrives literally a split second after the ball does. If that was at midfield it’s a shoulder to shoulder play. Forster came barreling in also and collided with Doherty just as much as Doherty collided with him.

I think you’ve got some big spurs-colored glasses with the framing of the play here, man. Don’t what else to say but I disagree on every word.

Doherty's head is a ball diameter away from the ball here. That's about as bang bang as you can get.

I think you’re way overestimating what would happen if a little contact was allowed. We expect referees to legislate contact all over the field. Why not with goalies also? Slide tackling is allowed even though occasionally there are terrible tackles that are red cards. And even though it’s allowed, we don’t see star players get taken out left and right with ankle breaking slide tackles. We can have some nuance here. It’s possible to have a middle ground where you can make contact with a goalie without headhunting them every time.

1) keepers are uniquely exposed when coming out for a ball, like a wide receiver reaching for a pass over the middle

2) keepers are significantly more valuable to take out of a play than anyone else on the field, there’s a reason that some corner kick routines try to box them out, to allow some contact is to invite everyone to try to take out the keeper legally because there’s huge rewards even if you don’t win the ball

3) because of 1 and 2, adding any leeway increases injury risk to keepers significantly, because they’re vulnerable and valuable you’ve now made it the logical play to try to physically box them out of every play, hoping that a small percentage get the judgment call to go your way. That means keepers are taking bumps left and right on balls in the box, and all because a keeper fumbled a ball while being hip checked on a hopeful cross? All rules are arbitrary but these ones are fine.

No, it's not just all because of this one play. I've held these beliefs long before this. Though in the case of this specific play, we're rewarding stupidity. He should have just punched the ball away and had he done so, there's no issue at all. As I said before, I've seen a number of instances where a goalie comes out after a ball that's going to land in the middle of a group of people, the goalie creates the contact, goes down and gets a free kick out of it. The current system rewards goalies making bad decisions on coming out on the ball because they know they'll get the benefit of the doubt 10 times out of 10.

This play for example happens in part because of overprotection of goalkeepers. De Gea doesn't even bother trying to get up because he thinks the opponent got his ankle and he's been taught to just stay on the ground. And it cost his team a goal because it was his teammate got him. The referee doesn't even see what happens. He just sees the goalie on the ground, waives off the goal and gives the free kick to ManU. Thankfully VAR got the call right.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on this. Nothing wrong with that.

bang bang is irrelevant - if you don't get the ball it's a foul. This is really consistent all over the field. I love the idiot commentator saying "he isn't even trying to commit a foul." WTH?

Anyway, Arsenal, wow. Completely outplay a totally listless City team for 55 minutes and then pay the price for continuing to play Xhaka. Gabriel gets booked for messing with the penalty spot then gets a second for a clear pull back. Then they bitch and moan about the refs before giving up a lucky winner. Never going to win trophies with that kind of stupidity. Liverpool fans have to be pissed.

The two young american strikers in MLS got their permanent European moves.

Dike to West Brom for 8-10 million. On the upside Dike should get some playing time at a level he's had success in, especially reuniting with his old Barnsley coach. On the downside, reuniting with that coach means going back to playing bumper car soccer(I assume, can't say I've watched West Brom this year) so I'm not sure how well this is going to prepare him to move up the USMNT depth chart outside of taking Pefok's "big guy to win the ball in the air off the bench" role. Plus there's a little bit of purgatory where with West Brom either he stays in the Championship which isn't a huge step up competitively, or he goes to the Prem and gets even fewer chances to play actual soccer against teams with 10x the budget. Best case scenario is he goes back to scoring for fun in the Championship but they don't get promoted, which keeps him in form through the world cup and maybe a move that winter or summer 2023.

Pepi to Augsburg for 18-20 million. This one has more going for it. Augsburg play a 2 striker system with neither performing and just made Pepi their record transfer, so he's gonna play. Despite being in the relegation zone they do attempt to play attacking soccer(hopefully avoiding the Sargent at Bremen problem) and the Bundesliga has a lot more parity so they don't have to starve the forwards of attacking reps in half their games. The downside here is that relegation risk, they're only 1 point clear of the playoff and several of the teams surrounding them(Stuttgart, Gladbach, Wolfsburg) have been better than Augsburg in the past. If they don't stay up then Pepi's going to be playing at (imo) a sub-MLS level heading into the world cup, which isn't great. Hopefully they hit their stride with a striker who can score and someone like Bochum runs out of steam.

would be remiss to not mention that Kovacic volley - that is so impressively difficult . . . glad Pulisic scored because he did not look very good.

Man U is such a mess. If people at the club and not just media are now questioning Rangnick, it really demonstrates the stupidity. They need to clean house with the shitty players they have and stop changing managers.

yikes, do not like that chelsea rumor at all - would be a terrible move unless it's a loan. Athletico doesn't thrill me either though Simeone would at least teach him how to defend. Seems like staying at Barca and learning from Alves is the best course.

They kept Ole on far too long. Should have sacked him when they blew their UCL group last season.

Isn’t Rangnick just the manager until the end of the year anyway and didn’t sign on long term or am I remembering that wrong?

yea, right. but after 5 games now they are questioning him? I'm assuming it's just the media but it's ridiculous. Did they actually think he would come in and in 5 games solve all their problems? The problem is player evaluation in my opinion. They like shiny things more than soccer players.

Oh for sure. They’ve got Rangnick for the rest of the year. No point in changing managers again this season. Just wait until after the year. I don’t think Ole was a good manager but I certainly don’t absolve the players either. A significant portion of the blame is on them and on who is bringing in the players.

The dest to Chelsea smoke is getting thick. On the one hand chelsea gets a lot of rightful criticism for their attack being kinda whack but they expect and get a lot out of their wingbacks so … it could be worse. Chillwell out for the year so plenty of opps for him this season. Next year they’ve talked about moving James inside as a RCB so could be a place for him at RCB next year

you mean as rb or wb? Maybe he should just become a mid

I'd still be a little uneasy about Dest going to Chelsea, but reading about all the CBs out of contract after this year(increasing the likelihood James could move there) and remembering Chilwell's out long term makes it a little easier to see the path forward. Regularly playing in a back 5 isn't ideal but at least Tuchel is like Berhalter in that he really emphasizes defensive solidity first.

sorry i meant if they move james to RCB it would open up a spot at RWB assumed azpiliceuta goes elsewhere. chilwell's backups are Alonso (surely gone in the summer) Emerson (on loan at Lyon, likely gone in the summer) and a 12 year old named Ian Maatsen. Chelsea get a lot out of the WBs, look how many G/A James and Chilwell have had this season. Alonso too. They're really midfielders.

Thomas Tuchel is just a walking bad vibe. I believe Dest would be a great fit for him tactically, but I just don't trust the man. He's got the shelf life of unrefrigerated milk.

Niche, but bit AFCON upset today as Comoros defeated Ghana today for their first win in major African competition (they lost their first round WC qualifier for 2022 and only formed a national team in 2018). This makes Ghana finish last in their group, knocking them out in the group stage in a 24 team tournament where 16 teams advance.

EDIT: Did I say win? That was the first time Comoros had scored in major competition. Put up 3 vs Ghana.

don't know much about him but he does seem to wear out his welcome everywhere he goes . . . looks like that time is coming fast at Chelsea

Today I learned there was a country called Comoros.

A day later, Algeria loses to Ivory Coast and finishes last in their group (that also contains Equatorial Guinea and Sierra Leone), failing to advance (after winning AFCON in 2019).

So in a 24 team tournament where 16 advance, Ghana and Algeria are two of the 8 that are knocked out in the group stage.
