so, its still based on ranking? I thought they were moving to something based on where you qualify?

It's interesting that there don't really seem to be truly dominant teams going into this world cup. Italy won the Euros and now may not make the world cup - that's amazing. Brazil and Argentina are good but not unbeatable. Germany is in a down cycle. England is over-rated as always. Seems like this field is ripe for a cinderella run.

Still rankings for this cycle, with all the pandemic complications. As rankings go, Germany, Netherlands, Denmark and Portugal are within 10 points of the USMNT, with the top 7 of Belgium, Brazil, France, England, Argentina, Italy and Spain currently a distance above. To catch them the USMNT is going to need to win 4 or 5 of their remaining qualifiers.

Italy and Portugal drawn together so one of them misses World Cup 2022. Hard to believe.

That's good for the USMNT pot 1 chances. Currently ranked 12th, and now only needs to be top 8 to get seeded

Also, the intercontinental draw was made, and the 4th place CONCACAF team will play the Oceania team in a playoff.

I'm pretty sure someone on the us soccer reddit did the math and is pretty sure that even if everything goes perfectly the US cant end up in Pot 1. But they might not have taken into account a scenario like this

USMNT has a 1% chance of jumping into the top 7.

However, if Italy doesn't make it, the US just needs to jump into the top 8, which is more likely.

If Italy AND Portugal don't make it, they need to jump into the top 9 (leapfrog 3 teams) which is much more likely.

Portugal isn't that good tho, right?

They frequently underperform their talent, but they have the players to beat anyone and occasionally do so(Euro winners in 2016, Nations League winners in 2019). There aren’t 13 teams in UEFA with better talent and historical results(recent or otherwise) at least.

They are pretty talented.

Googled their world ranking and was surprised. I thought they had fallen much further than that.

Only the top-4 teams in the EPL currently have a positive goal differential. Arsenal is 5th at -2. There are three other teams (Wolves, Brentford and Palace) with a GD of 0.

tough luck for Jesse Marsch. He was probably doomed from the start.

Seems like RB didn't have a plan with all the coaching and administratrive turnover they had, because they keep talking about how they knew Jesse's pressing system wasn't what they wanted when they hired him. Bizarrely handled. I'm sure he'll land on his feet, even if he ends up at LAFC or whatever.

Chris Armas joining Ragnick at United is another odd one.

Group G in the UCL:

Lille 8

Salzburg 7

Sevilla 6

Wolfsburg 5

Lille at Wolfsburg, Sevilla at Salzburg

The only thing that is settled is that Lille will be playing in Europe in 2022, though that could be the Europa League.

Lille can't finish 4th. Sevilla and Salzburg could finish in any of the 4 spots. Wolfsburg, due to the tiebreakers and which games are remaining, will either play in the UCL knockout rounds or be out of Europe altogether. They can't finish 3rd. They would win a three way H2H for 1st with a win and a Salzburg draw. They have the H2H tiebreaker with Lille for 2nd place if they win and the other game doesn't end in a tie. And if they draw and Salzburg wins, Sevilla has the tiebreaker for 3rd.

A most interesting group - predictable given the teams there that it would end like this! I think Ajax is the most impressive performance so far - 18 points and not from a totally weak group. They are also fun to watch.

LOL Chelsea. They give up a 94th minute goal to tie Zenit and finish second in the group.

EDIT: They’ll draw one of Ajax, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich or whoever wins Group G. I’m hoping they draw Bayern but I’m sure they’ll get the Group G winner.

very entertaining game - Zenit was the better team for most of it.
