Are the games televised? Anyone know? FS?

It looks like it's:

Thursday/El Salvador: CBS Sports Network, Paramount+, Universo

Sunday/Canada: FS1, Unimas, TUDN

Wednesday/Honduras: Paramount+, Universo

So the Honduras game is behind a non-cable paywall unless you have Universo, but the other 2 have more distribution.

I have paramount+!

Pulisic is not on the team flight to El Salvador, building up fitness in Nashville to prep for the Canada and Honduras matches.

Considering the tight window, this makes plenty of sense. Slot in Aaronsen and win anyway.

I live three blocks from where I lived when we lost in Couva. I remember the route I walked my dog after we lost to blow off steam. I remember the people I called. I remember the songs I listened to on the walk. In between, I moved twice, thousands of miles each time. Ricardo Pepi was born when I was a junior in HS. An entire horsefeathers show presidential administration came and went.

These thoughts don't mean anything to anyone but me, the relationship between my life and the time that has passed, but I couldn't be more excited to have world cup qualifying back in my life. Like most of you, I'm sure, sports calendar cycles help me measure time in my life and create milestones/landmarks that provide a rhythm and a feeling of normalcy. I can remember what I did and who I was with relative to the 2014, 2010, 2006, and 2002 world cups. Summer of 2018? I'd have to think harder without the timestamp framework.

Anyway, 9 points would be magic. I would really enjoy and appreciate that. I could even stop calling it the hex, because of cursed players/coaches/results, and could start calling it the octagon.

It would appear that Robbie Robinson did not need much time to feel out whether or not he wants to play for Chile:

He left camp and is back in Miami.

i have so many fun world cup memories

94 world cup - i was only 12. I was very into it for some reason. I suppose there was enough hype about it here since it was in the US that it was appearing on sportscenter etc. Something about it caught my attention even before watching any of the games. I watched the 2-1 win over colombia at my grandpa's house and celebrated my skinny ass off. Everyone thought I was nuts because we were a baseball/football family. My grandpa died later that year of brain cancer. At the time it felt like the distance between that June visit and his death that winter was great. But of course it was only a handful of months. Now that amount of time passes in a blink.

98 world cup - This would have been the summer between my sophomore and junior years of high school. I played on a soccer team in high school where only 2 or 3 americans made the roster, the rest of the squad was japanese, mexican, or brazillian. there may have been one or two german kids on our team at that point. Quirk of being a private school with an ESL program. That summer two of my best friends (Kenichi and Yuji) stayed in america to work on their english. If I remember right, those games mostly occurred in the afternoon in america. I have distinct memories of going to meet them at the dorms in the morning, working out, doing cardio, doing drills (in those stupid jump soles shoes) and then watching world cup games in the dorm all afternoon while begging the dorm parents to feed us. We played soccer in the fall, so my junior year season was coming up. I had made the starting XI as a midfielder my sophomore year but moved to keeper randomly mid-season after our top 2 guys left the school in the same week. We ended up being very good my junior year(but terrible my senior year when the international kids left and I broke my hand and couldn't play keeper anymore.) I remember watching the world cup games specifically focusing on the keepers, thinking, oh, ill just do what edwin van der saar does. It's that easy.

2002 world cup - Again, this seems like a lifetime passed between 98 and 2002. In 98, I was attending this christian private school, trying to convince myself to be holy and virtuous etc. By 2002 I was a typical drunk horny college kid. I remember explaining to all my friends how much fun the mexico-US game was going to be, and eventually convincing them all to get together at someone's house so we could stay up all night and watch it. About 30 minutes into the game, everyone is drunk and cheering their asses off. USA obviously wins the game, we're all hammered, celebrating. I think that game was like 2 or 3 am CT, so we all ended up in the front yard in lawn chairs watching the sun come up the morning after the win. I watched the finals in the bedroom of this random girl I had met the night before. I remember panicking after we had hooked up because my cell phone was in my pants somewhere in her darkened room, and i needed to find it so i could set my alarm to wake up and watch the game. A long time had passed since 98.

2006 world cup - i have very vague memories of this. No USA. I rooted for Brazil because some of Ronaldo. I dont even remember what I was doing with my life at this point. I had graduated from college but had not transitioned to the real world yet. My only lasting memory is being so happy watching Zidane get sent off because I couldn't stand any of those french teams and I disliked him specifically, probably for aesthetic reasons because he was bald.

2010 world cup - at this point i had already had and lost a real job, and was in another transition period trying to figure out what the hell to do with my life. I was very excited for this world cup. Donovan, dempsey, bradley, altidore. I think we were ranked in the top 15. I was living in a tiny apartment with a friend of mine. When I still had my real job, he and I pooled money and bought the biggest HDTV we could find and fit on our wall. It was enormous. I remember the USA-England match, and laughing at how we had utilized that terrible world cup ball to our advantage when Dempsey's little dink hit England's keeper with so much spin it just rolled out of his hands and into the goal. The iconic USA beats England 1-1 headline. All the vuvuzelas. People hated them but I liked them, or at least I tolerated them. It felt fun and unique. A country on the other side of the world can play the same sport as everyone else but still have their own culture tied to it. The game against Algeria, Im watching it quietly in the living room because my roommate was a night owl and always slept in. Each minute that ticked away killed me. It felt more and more unlikely literally every 60 seconds that we would get out of the group. By the 85th minute or so I was standing behind our couch. I remember this so vividly. Finally, like 92nd minute, USA hits the counter they'd been trying to get for like 20 minutes. Dempsey gets denied but Donovan finishes. I yelled so loud, something that wasn't even words but was just some kind of high-pitched yelp. Then I immediately covered my mouth because my roommate was asleep. Except he instantly burst out of his room cheering because he'd been watching it too.

2014 world cup - at this point im into my career, working in a newsroom with a handful of extremely hard core soccer guys. One of my editors was a very strange bachelor who took it all way too seriously. I dont remember all the specifics of how the group broke down but i made some crack about how funny it was that we were all sad about the draw to portugal but then happy following the loss to germany, since we still advanced out of the group after portugal beat ghana (???? cant remember if that's how it really broke down.) Minutes later this guy is going on a 25 paragraph rant about how americans (he was american too. from san antonio. Very white. Smelled like cheap cigarettes and natty light) don't understand soccer and we're all dumb brutes. I watched the game against Portugal, which ended brutally if you remember, on the outfield grass of our local AA baseball team. They have a nice little downtown stadium. They served us all booze and let us watch the game on the jumbotron. Everyone was so hyped, but when the game ended 2-2 or whatever after the late equalizer, everyone walked out looking like tyrion when gregor killed the viper. just gutted.

2018 - if i remember right this world cup was canceled and never happened. Fun fact.

94 world cup - i was only 12.

I was 8 and only remember the cartoon dog mascot because it was a cardboard display in the lobby of my town's shitty indoor soccer facility that stayed up for years after.

I was on a boat on the Long Island Sound during this game, pretending to work, along with a few coworkers and the ships' crew, who were all largely strangers to us. We had a radio feed, and when they scored the goal, everyone lost their horsefeathers, and the crew brought out booze. The chief scientist was pumped enough to pretty much just shut down everything and let everyone party for the rest of the day. I don't even think anyone was really a big soccer fan.

94 - I was 11, my only memories of the WC were: my dad going to the opening match through his work, my grandfather taking me to the Germany-Belgium game and not really appreciating the enormity of it until I was walking up to Soldier Field and the fans were chanting and just wild. I vaguely remember the own goal against Colombia, but the WC was more of a curiosity to me

98 - My friend in HS was from France so I got behind them in this World Cup. The only thing I remember from the US standpoint was a sportscenter segment talking about how the US technically finished dead last in the tournament. I learned a lot more about this WC from the US standpoint from the Men in Blazers Podcast series American Fiasco

02 - Similar to IMB, was in college at this point and this is the first WC I was into soccer even though all the games were overnight. The hype going into the US-Mexico game was incredible though I don't think I 100% understood how important the rivalry was at this point. The night before the Germany game, I had a few too many beverages and felt like horsefeathers the next day, so I went to bed at a normal time, woke up 5 minutes before the game started, laid there nearly comatose watching it (though the handball controversy got me jumping off the couch) and then going back to sleep sad immediately after. It sucked to lose but naively I thought that this was just part of the US's steady progression into contenders. Whoops.

06 - This is the first WC I started really watching the whole thing and not just the US. I actually met up with an old NSBB guy sethuel and a bunch of his friends at what is now AJ Hudsons (drawing a blank on the previous name) for the Italy game. First time really in a soccer bar during an important game so I enjoyed being the only team to take points from Italy during that WC even though we played shorthanded most of the game. Was disappointed to not get out of the group, but it allowed me to focus my attention on the other teams

10 - I was so hyped for US-England and thrilled to draw there. The Algeria game I was watching at work on my computer and really depressed the entire time since we wouldn't finish and were so close to going out in the group stage. I had no idea anyone else in my office was watching it but when the US scored I heard yelling from about 80% of the people in the office. Turns out everyone was hiding a browser with the game on like I was.

14 - My boss in 2014 was a gigantic soccer guy, so he'd shut down our office during every game. When the Wondo missed that chip shot at the end of the Portugal game, he walked out of the office and didn't return until the next day lol. I remember being disappointed but also hopeful because Julian Green scored in ET lol.

18 - It was definitely canceled, but in my mind the Women's World Cup took the place of the 18 WC. Our whole office was into it and we had all the games on the TV, so that was fun. A bunch of people who didn't care about soccer at all, or sports in general got into it.

We're all in this together. We are the message board generation. We are all old.

That said, you know who doesn't have any memories of the world cup? Weston McKennie. And I think that rules.

“I didn’t really tune in last time to the World Cup qualifiers,” he said. “I watched highlights of the [decisive] Trinidad game, I think like everyone else did. But yeah, I don’t really watch sports so I didn’t really catch a lot of it.”

I had come around on Acosta being a useful member of the national team, but now I think I love him?

Drawing on his own experience and observation of similar climactic moments, Acosta went to work, standing between Al-Haydos and the goal and then letting his mouth run.

“I was just saying, ‘You’re going to let your country down. You’re going to miss it. I’ve seen you try to chip it before. You’re wearing No. 10 for no reason. You might as well take it off. You’re just out here. They should put a cone out there instead,’ ”

They then clinched the title when reserve goalie Ethan Horvath saved a subsequent spot kick from Andrés Guardado.

Watch the video, and you can see Acosta standing closest to the El Tri veteran, repeatedly shoving Diego Lainez out of the way. Acosta had been in Guardado’s ear seconds before, honing his Concacaf craft.

“I was like, ‘You’re going to let your country down. All these fans are going to start booing you. You didn’t even start the game. You’re retired,’ ” Acosta recalls.

"You didn't even start the game, you're retired" is just incredible

Was just going to post this. All Kellyn Acosta slander stops now.

Canada is getting completely concacaf’d at home v Honduras. This would be an absolutely devastating loss for them. I’ll write them off now if they don’t pull it out.

Tied it up

Dumb comment but I always assumed “concacaf’d” was only used when the better team is on the road.

I’m referring to the Honduran shenanigans and terrible officiating.

Gonna be important to not give one up early. I think if we can get settled in in the first 30 or so without giving one up, we'll be golden.

Don't want to give one up and give them confidence or let the crowd get into it.
