I was trying to root for Mexico but then the first time they showed a slo mo of chicarito's stupid face rolling in agony trying to get a foul I just couldn't do it.

Call me crazy but it might not be a good idea to leave a guy who has scored 25+ goals in the England the last three years wide open on the far post.

Might be better to be the runner up in Group G anyway. Winner would get the runner up of H followed by the winner of Brazil-Germany (assuming Mexico wins the group). Loser gets Colombia and the winner of Mexico-Serbia/Switzerland. Could end up with France, Brazil, Belgium, Germany, Portugal/Spain and Uruguay all on one side of the bracket.

Looking good for Spain/Argentina if they can win their groups.

Is Colombia any good? They're the closest thing to a rooting interest I have in this tournament

Yes, they're favored to win this group, and they could give a good game to their likely first knockout opponent(England or Belgium). They made it to the quarterfinals in 2014 and lost close to Brazil.

Thanks. Usually I root for the US, followed by the Netherlands. Father-in-law is from Colombia, so that's option C

if they lose to japan they’re an underdog to even advance. they still have Poland, who’s good, and Senegal, who’s also pretty good.

That dude who got red carded is just a massive goat.

Yeah, that was dumb. It’s the third minute. Just give up the goal. Easier to come back from a goal down than play 87 minutes with 10 men and probably be a goal down.

Anyone here listening/listened to the American Fiasco podcast?

I've listened to the first two.

I just listened to the first 3 this morning and was enjoying it. I've seen Men in Blazers hailed as one of the better sports podcasts a lot over the years; is it something a mostly non-soccer fan could get into like AF?

for the seasoned soccer fans: your thoughts on senegal's second goal? i've never seen a sub score a goal in that fashion almost immediately after coming into a game.

I haven't watched as much soccer as some others, but to me that seems like an extreme fluke. Some of the announcers/studio guys were saying that you need to wait for the game to calm down to wave the guy on, but when he did it Poland had a guy waiting for the ball to come down unopposed with his back to goal. the fact that he played it to another teammate who first-timed that looping ball into no man's land seems like something you just shrug your shoulders about. The ref wants to get back to 11 v 11 and the play certainly wasn't goal dangerous for Senegal at the time, but I also don't fault the Poland player for trying to play that ball all the way back because he probably didn't see the guy get waved on and he wasn't in the field of vision.

Probably.

I'm not a huge fan. They're very one note after a while. Listen and if you find them entertaining, it'll probably make you like soccer more. If you already know a lot about soccer, you're not getting much actual insight or analysis and you can only handle so much light sarcasm and references to things making Roger's nipples tingle before you realize there are way better podcasts out there.

It wasn't a sub - there is a rule that if you get injured and the training staff comes on, you have to leave the game and then get waved back in by the ref. It's intended to prevent wasting time by faking injuries (thankfully, teams have stopped playing the ball out every time someone stays down). They need to re-visit the rule as it doesn't do much if the player just gets waved back on in the middle of a play.

That said, I think Poland needs to be more aware - its not like he was standing behind the defense - he ran like 60 yards to get to the ball.

I have a really bad habit of turning on these games after all the goals have already been scored, only to watch an hour of scoreless soccer
