It's more the story of the modern day NASL. That league is getting usurped by the USL, which has a cheap entry fee and much lower player costs.

It's getting it from both directions. MLS is NBA-ABA'ing it's most promising clubs (Montreal, Minnesota & probably Sacramento & San Antonio at some point) or muscling them out of their markets with new MLS franchises (Strikers, Miami FC, Silverbacks, Cosmos, Rowdies) and creating development team affiliations with the USL. There's no question they're trying to squeeze NASL out.

Just realized that I'm going to be in Scotland the weekend of Celtic-Rangers at Celtic Park. Despite the potential for fan violence, I'm seriously thinking about trying to get tickets because of how great of an atmosphere it would be.

You should definitely try and get one of those half-and-half scarves and go.

Nothing would make me laugh harder than the WNT getting bounced in a QF after all that crap they talked about the MNT, their CBA and their ambulance-chasing lawyer putting out revenue numbers assuming they'd win gold.

I agree, the WNT members throwing the MNT players under the bus whilst ignoring the actual details of their CBA including the closed contracts and fact that USSF completely subsidizes their league but for some reason that doesn't count as compensation was pretty douchey.

No, your statement.

You're pissed that the women's team wants better treatment. You're pissed that somebody said less than perfect praise about your team.

That's douchey.

Yeah, no. Go look up my actual posts about it from a couple months ago if you want to post something factual.

within context it's not as bad. Still a stupid thing to say.

I don't think they like the ex-coach.

Yep. Pia used to be the US coach and now is the Sweden coach, and there's definitely some drama going on there.

Pia doesn't exactly care for the WNT players either. The antipathy there is pretty mutual.

In a normal federation a result like this would lead to a changing of the guard and the WNT would cycle out some of the veterans for some of the really promising younger players out there, but for contractual and other reasons that won't happen.

They looked rather lackluster in the games I watched. There must be a reason no one ever wins the olympics after winning the world cup.

Mexico's elimination on the men's side was absolutely shocking.

There were some odd roster choices but the fundamental problem with the WNT is baked into their CBA. There are contractual provisions regarding calls ups that make it extremely difficult for a manager to turn over the roster, which tends to result in stagnation when a generation of players starts to look past prime. Basically there are very low limits on the number of days a player who isn't already under a WNT contract can be called into a camp so going into a tournament a manager can either call up a new player or a veteran; they couldn't call both into camp and evaluate and go with the best option.

Which is how you end up with Megan Rapinoe, 7 months removed from an ACL tear playing heavy minutes in the Olympics.

Not for nothing, but Jill Ellis is not a very good manager either.

Mexico struggling in Brazil doesn't surprise me; most of their best talent is on the senior roster.

And Carli Lloyd is already talking about 2019 WC and 2020 Olympics...she'll be 37 and 38 for those.

I will say I'm excited to see Mallory Pugh develop.

Hull City only have 11 senior field players under contract, had to stock their bench with youth academy players, so of course Leicester play the worst game they've played in like 15 months and lose.

First defending champion to lose since 89-90, I think.
