Short made the Fringe 5

Like few players who’ve appeared among the Five before, Short possesses simultaneously both a real lack of pedigree but also all the indicators of a true prospect. He was selected in the 17th round last year out of a school (Sacred Heart) that has produced just one major leaguer ever. At the same time, however, he’s recording markedly above-average offensive numbers and playing shortstop exclusively as a 22-year-old at High-A. His strikeout rate (17.6%) is a bit higher than the sort typically produced by players who appear in this column. That seems to be a function more of patience, however, and less of an inability to make contact. Consider: while recording one of thehighest walk rates in the Carolina League, he’s also responsible for one of the lowest swinging-strike rates.

Saw Davell in the Longenhagen chat

12:16

Davell: Did the Cubs get a steal with Nelson Velázquez?

12:18

Eric A Longenhagen: He has looked good and may have been under-valued on draft day due to a hamstring injury that limited his mobility during the spring. Ask me about him again next week after I’ve seen him three more times. AZL Cubs are in the finals

No surprise here - Jen-Ho Tseng was named Minor League Pitcher of the Year and Victor Caratini was named Minor League Player of the Year.

Yup, both deserving. This is Tseng's second one, right?

Yep. His last one was in 2014.

I've already read a similar article about Chris but damn if this didn't have me in tears after reading it. What an outstanding man. Good Lord, what our country could learn if they approached life more like this young man.

Yeah. I'm really happy the Cubs drafted him and if his baseball career doesn't work out I wouldn't mind the Cubs organization keeping him around as a coach or mentor for the younger players.

The fallout from the Braves investigation might be huge:

The investigation remains open and is expected to look into the signing of top prospect Kevin Maitan, a 17-year-old shortstop who received a $4.25 million bonus last year. If improprieties are discovered with Maitan’s signing, he, too, could be declared a free agent

BA is hemorrhaging talent. A couple of years after Jim Callis and Aaron Fitt left, John Manuel and Will Lingo are leaving.

Yeah, they're not looking like they'll make it too much longer, in my mind.

Wow, that makes me sad. I loved reading the Q&A when Callis ran it while he was there. I don't even go to BA that much anymore. In-depth prospect and minor league coverage all over the internet is getting better.

For now, BA is still the top source around draft time and super valuable for draftniks. They do need to hire some good young talent or they'll become irrelevant pretty soon.

Decent article, but it doesn't seem all that strange to me that "HE NEVER TOUCHED A BASEBALL TIL HE WAS 6"

wow he's so raw, he's only been playing baseball for 16 years. He's basically a newbie

We've all heard the cautionary tales of 3 year olds burning out their arms, good thing he waited

Are kids that young suppose to play with a full-size baseball? Like I thought I read somewhere that they encourage kids to play with a softer lighter baseball before their bodies/arms physically mature. I honestly can't recall little league baseball anymore, but I do remember the ball being a little bit different. I could be wrong... Anyway, when I play with my nephews I just use tennis balls.
