I get this for NY. Not sure I understand it for Pitt.

The again, it seems obvious that the price of pitching this offseason is ridiculous.

Kang/Mercer/Harrison?

they are going to play Mercer on purpose?

That seems silly.

They've turned a lot of pitchers of varying skill into better pitchers over the last several years. Their pitching coach is pretty good.

Harrison, maybe?

Then what at 3B?

Those were usually pitchers who either had a pedigree and mixed results or who had good stuff but hadn't unlocked it. Niese is neither of those.

Maybe they are counting on him repeating his success with Happ.

I figured Kang at 3B, unless they plan on playing him at SS.

Once again, that leaves you playing Mercer on purpose.

While I agree with you that it's not an ideal scenario to have his bat in the lineup everyday, he is a solid defensive shortstop and can be buried at the bottom of the batting order to limit the damage his bat might cause. If Harrison, Kang, and Mercer are your three options to play those three positions, it probably makes the most sense to have Mercer at SS, Kang at 3B, and Harrision at 2B. Obviously, there's still a long way to go in the offseason, so they could pick up someone else capable of playing one or more of those positions.

This is a bit underwhelming for the Pirates in my humble opinion.

Agreed, but backs up what Theo or Jed said about the price on pitchers being through the roof. Also, blame Stewart for inflating the pitching market.

Pirates' SB Nation site at 3:19: Details of trade still coming out. Obviously Pirates getting somebody else because Walker is too good to 1-for-1 with Niece.

On a different note...

Apparently we should be able to get a pretty good starting position player for Hammel if we so choose.

He's the Pirates version of Starlin Castro. Except he's white and all the beat guys like him. But he was the original of all the guys that came up in that organization and was on some bad teams.

he also was born and grew up in pittsburgh, and was drafted by the organization. fans and writers liked him because he was a pitt guy who made it.

it's not really that simple. the pirates, if they use all of their club options, have niese for 3/30. hammel is a free agent after this season. the pirates presumably valued the cost control that niese offered.

Doesn't hammel have an extremely cheap 2017 option

Yeah it's $9 million this year with a $10 million option next year ($2 million buyout).

yeah, $12m. for some reason i just remembered the contract as 2/20 and didn't know there was an option. guess that makes it not too different from niese then.
